About This Certificate
This certificate introduces students to the legal and social systems that shape juvenile justice and child welfare.
Students complete two required courses CJ 2330 Juvenile Justice and SW 3350 Child Welfare and choose one elective from CJ 2360 Juvenile Law and Procedures or SW 3360 Adolescents: Theories, Problems, and Issues, totaling nine credit hours. While only three courses are required, students may take additional electives to deepen their understanding of youth-focused legal and social services.
What You Will Learn
Students will study the origins and guiding principles of the juvenile justice system, learning how juvenile law differs from adult procedures.
They will explore how poverty, violence, and family systems affect children’s well-being, along with the roles of child welfare and juvenile justice agencies. Through their elective, students will further examine juvenile law or major issues facing adolescents such as mental health, substance abuse, education, and unemployment gaining a clearer picture of the challenges and protections shaping youth today.
