Frequently Asked Questions

1

How do I run a channel scan?

Some problems with cable can be solved by running a channel scan on your television. This process can vary depending on the model and manufacturer of your television. The instructions below are generalized; for specific instructions, please refer to your owner's manual.
  • Ensure that the television is connected to the cable jack and that the television has power.
  • Change the television to the TV input.
  • Open the television's menu by pressing the menu button on the remote.
  • Navigate the menu to the channel scan option. Depending on the model of television it may be listed under a submenu. Common submenus to search include:
    • Channels
    • Television/Tuner
    • Setup
    • Installation
    • Options
    • Advanced
  • Select the channel scan option. Some television models call it "channel scan", "automatic scan", channel program", or some variation thereof.
    • Some television models will have options for different signal, source, or input types. If this option exists, make sure that you select "cable" instead of "air."
    • Some television models will have options for different scan types. If this option exists, make sure that you select "digital scan", "digital and analog scan" or "both" and NOT "analog scan."
    • Wait for the channel scan to complete. Depending on the television model this can take between 10-20 minutes.

What is a QAM tuner and how do I know if my television has one?

A QAM tuner allows your television to tune to digital or HD channels. Most, but not all, televisions that were made after 2006 have a QAM tuner built in. You can search online by make/model of your television or reference your television owner's manual for specific model information related to what type of tuner is present in the television.

An example of what the manual may say if the television has a QAM tuner: "Built in digital tuner (ATSC/Clear QAM)", or "ATSC/NTSC/QAM."

Televisions that may be missing the QAM tuner (depending on the model):
  • Apex
  • Dynex
  • Element
  • Haier
  • Seiki
  • Sylvania
If you are choosing one of these brands, please verify that the model has a QAM tuner. Please be advised that less expensive televisions sometimes come with a lower quality QAM tuner that may not be able to tune all of the channels.

What if my TV doesn't have a QAM tuner?

If your television does not have a QAM tuner built in, you can purchase an external set-top tuner to augment your non-compatible television. If you choose to purchase such a device, make sure that it has a QAM tuner. Our television provider recommends the iView 3500STBII. Set-top tuners will also need to run a channel scan that should be accessible through their menu.

Problem Solution
After the channel scan completes, the television only has two channels: 2 and 116.
  • Ensure that a digital scan is being run, not just an analog scan.
  • Ensure that the television has a QAM tuner (see above).
The television menu doesn't have a channel scan option.
  • Ensure that the television is set to the TV input.
  • Explore the various submenus.
The channel scan completes, but I'm missing channels.
  • Try running a second channel scan. If the problem persists, it is possible that the tuner cannot support higher frequencies or the television itself lacks sufficient memory to store all channels.
