About the Community

Living Here

Richards and Bullen is a unique community of suite and apartment style housing located in Central Campus (near Aggie Ice Cream!). The culture is centered on mostly first-year students seeking a bit more independence. Richards Hall generally has a larger population of international students studying abroad.

The Central Campus community features a large lawn area with a volleyball net and plenty of room for other outdoor activities. The social environment is lively and perfect for meeting new friends. During warmer months, students enjoy activities in the area like ultimate Frisbee, football, or volleyball. In the winter, the suites and apartments are great for hosting movie/game nights, or dinner parties. Students who live here also have the support of many Residence Life Staff members.

Students living in Central Campus have meal plans and enjoy the convenience of having The Junction right next door, where one swipe from your meal card allows you to stay as long as you want and eat as much as you want.

Some sustainability initiatives for Richards and Bullen include:

  • Large recycling receptacles located outside each building
  • Two recycling bins provided for each suite/apartment
  • Area-wide participation in the "Energy Wars" program
  • Bicycle racks located next to each building
  • Annual programs focused specifically on sustainability

Traditions

There's a few events held in Central Campus year after year that students enjoy. The fan favorite is the Central Campus Carnival, where the area is converted into a carnival-themed event with various games and activities for students and a chance to win some sweet prizes!

At the beginning of the school year, get ready for the Week of Welcome BBQ. Before one of the first football games of the year, students gather in Central Campus for some good food, then rally together and march to the football stadium for the game.

The Junction, right next door to both Richards and Bullen, hosts all sorts of events throughout the year, often with free food. A few of the more popular events include Open Mic Night, the Luau, and Oktoberfest.

Area Council

Area Council is a great way for residents to get involved in their community. It's similar to a student council. Membership is free and it's always open to new recruits. Active members have added benefits of free lock-outs, a chance to apply for scholarships, leadership retreats and networking.

Residents participating in Area Council are given the opportunity to plan programs for their area with the assistance of an advisor and a healthy budget courtesy of the USU Residence Hall Association. Area Council places a heavy focus on advocacy initiatives, allowing residents to make a great impact in the community. In addition, Area Council provides many leadership opportunities and serves as a great résumé builder.

What To Bring

Ideas

Our Pinterest page has some great visual ideas and suggestions for what to bring. You can also see what things are best to leave at home.

Make Your "Home Away From Home"

Bring these items and make it your "home away from home."

  • Bedding: sheets, blankets, pillow, pillowcases, and bedspread. Mattresses are 36” x 80” (Twin XL, longer than a regular twin bed)
  • Towels and toiletries
  • Laundry basket
  • Alarm clock
  • Stereo, radio
  • Computer
  • Wall decor, throw pillows, various decorative items as desired.

(Please do not use anything that may damage the walls to hang décor. We recommend using Command Picture Hanging Strips/Hooks by 3M)

In addition to your personal belongings, you may want to bring the following. Check with your roommates in advance to avoid duplication. You may even want to wait until after you move in and purchase items after consulting each other. The following is a list of possibilities:

  • Small refrigerator
  • Microwave

Please note: If you choose to bring a small refrigerator and/or microwave, make sure that you get one with a long cord as the electrical outlets are inconveniently located and these appliances must be plugged directly into the wall outlet, not into an extension cord or power strip, as per the USU Fire Marshal.

Storage space in all buildings is very limited. Please plan accordingly.

Housekeeping & Maintenance

Residents are responsible for cleaning their apartment, which includes the bathroom and should stock household cleaning supplies and toilet paper. Vacuum cleaners can be checked out for temporary use at the area office. Repairs and regular maintenance of residence halls is done by Housing Facilities staff. Residence may submit maintenance requests.
