Undergraduate Research

research.usu.edu/undergradresearch

What Is Undergraduate Research at USU?

Since 1975, the award-winning USU undergraduate research program has provided students with unique, tailored opportunities to develop their own curiosity alongside the skills required for a range of advanced careers. USU's undergraduate research program gives students the opportunities to work with faculty and post-graduate researchers, contributing to cutting-edge research tackling real world problems.

Students get involved in research in a variety of ways. They may conduct a independent project, participate in field research, or work in a lab or arts studio. The UR program is about developing students core skills while giving them the opportunities to explore their interests and career choice. Research is a high-impact practice that sets your student up for success as they customize their own education and follow their passions.

Skills Students Gain

  • Analytical Skills
  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Troubleshooting
  • Writing Skills
  • Creativity

How to Get Involved

Students who have at least six more semesters and wish to benefit from USU's undergraduate research program are encouraged to either contact Athena Dupont or Alexa Sand at the UR office. Alternatively, an application can be completed at research.usu.edu/ur/urf. Applications for the Undergraduate Research Fellowship open in mid-March. Early priority applications must be submitted by the middle of April, with guaranteed notification before the beginning of May. Applications will be accepted until mid-June for all others.

Why Get Involved in Undergraduate Research at USU?

Our undergraduate researchers have gone on to study further in prestigious institutions such as Oxford University, and the Berklee College of Music. In addition to further academic study, our UR participants are business founders, performers, and NASA researchers. USU;s program equips students with the practical experience and soft skills needed to excel in high-income-potential roles.

Students who are involved with research can earn a transcript designation as "research scholars," helping them stand out on job or graduate school applications and are more likely to receive prestigious scholarships such as the Goldwater, Rhodes, and Udall awards. UR participants have also been listed as authors on peer-reviewed scientific papers and presented at international conferences, sharing graduate-quality work with experts in their fields.

Most importantly, engagement with undergraduate research exposes students to experiences, opportunities, and training that empower them to explore their full potential.

Disability Resource Center

usu.edu/drc

Many students will need accommodations at some point during their university experience. If your student has used an IEP, 504 plan, or had previous accommodations, the Disability Resource Center (DRC) is an important resource for them. If your student has not used services in the past but they have a medical, physical, or mental health condition that impacts school, the DRC may be able to help.

The Disability Resource Center helps students with disabilities more fully participate in all university programs, services and activities. Students who have, or suspect they may have, a physical, mental health or learning disability that may require accommodations should contact the DRC as soon as possible.

It is easy to get started. Just schedule an appointment by calling 435.797.2444. During an initial appointment with an Accessibility Consultant, students will discuss their academic goals, the impact of their disability, and any educational barriers they are experiencing. Using this information, along with any documentation that may be needed, appropriate accommodations will be established.

Common Accommodations Include

  • Extended time on tests
  • Reduced distraction testing environment
  • Note takers or assistive note taking technology
  • Audio versions of books
  • Interpreting, transcribing, and captioning
  • Accessible furniture
  • Architectural access
  • Accessible on-campus housing
