Canvas Credentials (formerly Badgr)
Information we want you to know first:
- Badgr is a software included within Canvas that allows instructors to award custom badges to students who complete instructor designated requirements.
- The free version of Badgr available to USU instructors only allows badges to be documented within the course, not across the institution. Paid versions of Badgr can be arranged through your department.

Creating a Badger Account
You will need a Badgr Account to get started. Follow these steps:
Navigate to Badgr.com/auth/login
Click Create Account
Next, enter your email and click Continue
You will be receive a verification code to the email used to create your account
Enter the code and click Verify to finish creating your account
Fill in your information to complete the signup process
Create and confirm your password
Click Create account
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "View Canvas Badges Backpack" to begin issuing badges
Creating a New Issuer for Badgr
An issuer is an organization, department, or an individual issuing badges. To set up badging in a Canvas course you must have an issuer.
To create a new issuer, navigate to Badgr.com/issuers
Click Create issuer
Fill out issuer details:
- Name: Enter your name
- Website URL: A website that will provide viewers with more information about the issuer
- Email: Enter your USU email for support or inquiries
- Description: Provide additional context about the issuer awarding badges (This description helps recipients better understand specific goals of the issuer.)
- Image: An image that represents you and your badges
Click Create Issuer
Once saved, your issuer will be ready to use in Badgr for awarding badges
Enabling Badges in Canvas
Navigate to your Canvas course
Click Settings
Click Navigation
Find Credentials and enable it for the course
(Position it in the menu so it is easy to find.)
Click Save
Click Credentials in the navigation menu
Enter your Canvas Badges account email and click Next
Verify your account and click Next
Click Select issuer and select the issuer that will be used for the course
After selecting an issuer you can create, add, and award Badges to your course
Creating Badges in Canvas
You can create new badges inside your Canvas course.
Click Credentials
Click Add badge
Click the settings menu icon
Click Create New Badge
Add basic badge information
- Enter a name in the Name field
- Add a badge image by using the file uploader
- Enter a summarized description in the Description field
- To have your badge show on your issuer and organization public pages, click the Display on issuer and organization public pages checkbox
- To add an earning criteria description, enter a description
- To preview your badge, click the Preview link
- To add a criteria URL, enter the URL in the Criteria URL field
(Optional: Add additional information for the badge)
Click Create badge
Select Award Type
To award a badge based on criteria in your Canvas course, click the Canvas integration radio button. To award a badge manually, click the Manually radio button.
Edit Specify Requirements
- To select which course item is required to complete the badge, click the Course item drop-down menu.
- To have learners submit evidence for completion, click the Evidence required for Completion checkbox.
- To select the type of trigger for the badge, click the Trigger type drop-down menu and select the trigger type.
- To award the badge as soon as the requirements are met, click the Award the badge as soon as the requirements are met radio button.
- To set a date trigger for badge awarding, click the Set date trigger for badge awarding radio button.
Click Add badge
How to Add Requirements and Badges in Canvas
To automatically award badges in Canvas, you must first set up completion requirements in your modules.
Navigate to "Modules"
Go to the module where the badge will be awarded and click the settings menu icon for the module
Click Edit
Click Add Requirement
Edit the module requirements to fit your course and needs
Complete all: Will allow you set multiple requirements for the module that must be completed.
Complete one: Will give you the ability to create multiple requirements with students being required to complete at least one.
Click Add Requirement
Select the content
Choose the action needed for completion.
Click Save
Navigate to Credentials
Click Add badge
Select the badge being issued
To award a badge based on criteria in your Canvas module, click the Canvas integration radio button
Choose the module the badge will be associated with
Click Add badge
The badge will be automatically awarded when the module requirements are completed.
