Single Program Phone Number Initiative

This initiative only effects programs that have been assigned more than one phone number.

Overview & Background

Signal Vine will soon be moving programs to one number per program. It used to be each phone number assigned to a program was limited in the number of messages it could send in one hour. To accommodate this, programs that anticipated messaging large groups of students were assigned multiple phone numbers to ensure the timely delivery of message campaigns. Recent advances to Signal Vine’s platform and contracts with mobile carriers now allow for an indefinite number of texts to be sent from a single program phone number.

With this change, Signal Vine has asked us to work with them to move all programs to one number per program by mid-June. We’re hoping to get this done at USU in May.

How will this affect my program/students?

Currently, when contacts are added to programs with multiple phone numbers, Signal Vine automatically assigns them to one of the phone numbers assigned to that program. This means that different students in your program receive messages from different phone numbers. Once we make the change to a single phone number per program, all students in a program will receive text messages from the same phone number.

This will simplify things in the long run; however, after the change, some students who have received messages from your program in the past will start receiving messages from a different phone number. Depending on the student population that you message, and if you'll be messaging them over the summer, you may want to consider sending a message to inform students of this change.

Here's an example of what this message might say:
"Hi! This is Sean from the XXXX Office. Just wanted to give you a heads up that future messages from our office will come from 435-XXX-XXXX. If you have any questions about this, let me know."

What's needed from program admins?

  1. Review the phone numbers assigned to your program and choose one you would like to keep. You can view your program’s assigned numbers by following these steps:
    1. Log into signalvine.usu.edu.
    2. Select the Programs tab and ensure your program is selected on the left.
    3. Select the Phone Numbers tab.
  2. Determine a week during the month of May that would work best for Signal Vine to remove the remaining phone numbers from your program.
  3. Fill out this form by April 30th to inform us of the phone number you’d like to keep and when would work best for Signal Vine to make these adjustments.
