Renowned Clarinet Soloist to Perform at USU

International artist Oskar Espina-Ruiz performs Oct. 14 at Utah State University, 7:30 p.m., Caine Performance Hall on USU's Logan campus. The solo recital is part of the Caine College of the Arts Visiting Artists and Scholars series.

Oskar Espina-Ruiz, a multifaceted clarinet soloist from Spain, performs Oct.  14 at Utah State University. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Caine Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus as part of the Caine College of the Arts’ Visiting Artists and Scholars series.

Espina-Ruiz has performed everywhere from the Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia, to New York City to Hong Kong. He is currently clarinet artist faculty at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts while keeping his busy concert schedule. He is also the artistic director of the Treetops Chamber Music Society in Stamford, Conn.

“It is so beneficial for our students to receive coaching from guest artists,” said Nick Morrison, senior associate dean in the Caine College of the Arts. “Espina-Ruiz is an excellent role model for them.”

He will work with the USU Symphony Orchestra, coaching excerpts of repertoire that is programmed for its next concert, Morrison said.

“Our students put a lot of energy into preparing for these opportunities and it is exciting to see them rise to new levels of professionalism,” Morrison said.

Espina-Ruiz’s recital, “Clarinet Without Borders,” will be a blend of classical, modern and popular styles.

His visit is also sponsored by the Etxepare Basque Institute.

The clarinet recital is free and open to the public. For more information contact the CCA Box Office located in room L101 of the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s campus, call 435-797-8022 or see the college’s Production Services website.
