New Flexible Sidewalk Could Save Trees

A new flexible sidewalk made of recycled materials is being used at several locations around Logan in an attempt to save the lives of trees. ... In a partnership between Utah State Univeristy’s department of wildland resources, the USU Forestry Extension and Logan city, sidewalk concrete where tree roots have caused buckling was replaced with a recycled plastic that would provide more give than rigid concrete. ... Mike Kuhns, the department head of wildland resources, explained the process of replacing the sidewalk. The damaged concrete of the sidewalk is removed until good concrete is found. Roots that stick up or have grown over the sidewalk are then removed, and the slabs of plastic are locked in using anchors. This allows for the tree to continue to grow without damaging the sidewalk or causing a tripping hazard.
