USU Meets with Vice Mayor of Shanghai

Utah State University leaders met with Vice Mayor Weng Tie Hui of Shanghai, China, in mid-September to learn about USU programs in arts, sports education and agriculture. Hui and delegates from Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Shanghai Symphony and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government visited Utah and its public universities to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Utah Governor’s Office of Economic Development.
Christopher Terry, associate dean of Caine College of the Arts, showcased the arts programs, state-of-the art performance venues and USU’s celebration of The Year of the Arts. Dennis Dolny, head of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science in the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services, demonstrated degree programs and the latest advances in sports education and human movement science. In addition to surveying a wide variety of academic and research programs, Kenneth White, dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, explained the land-grant mission of teaching, research and Extension to the delegation.
“USU is committed to education, excellence and global learning,” said Interim Provost Laurens H. Smith. “It is clear that the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission shares our commitment to provide a quality education to students.”
Janis Boettinger, vice provost and director of the Office of Global Engagement, will work with the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission to explore the establishment of agreements and memorandums of understanding that may include student exchange, vocational and academic training and other collaboration.
