NEHMA Welcomes Bolton Colburn as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions

Bolton Colburn has been named as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art.
Utah State University’s Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) welcomes Bolton Colburn as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. Colburn has collaborated with NEHMA in the past, most recently as Guest Curator of the two-part exhibition Collecting on the Edge and editor of the accompanying publication.
“I’ve long admired NEHMA for its collection and now, with the newly renovated and expanded building, for its exhibition spaces as well,” Colburn said. “I’m excited about working with Katie Lee-Koven and the NEHMA team in developing its future exhibition program and collection.”
Colburn has extensive curatorial and museum leadership experience, specializing in American art in the western United States, particularly in California art.
“Having served as a guest curator for the ‘Collecting on the Edge’ exhibition and as editor for the catalogue, he has already spent an extensive amount of time becoming familiar with our collection,” said Executive Director Katie Lee-Koven. “He has a reputation of curating exhibitions that highlight unique and untold stories of art, and for taking risks.”
Colburn’s other projects in recent years include supervising the development of the facility and permanent exhibition for Heroes Hall, a new museum in Orange County California focused on the stories of our veterans. He has held posts as executive director of the Surfing Heritage Foundation, director of the Laguna Art Museum, senior curator of the Laguna Art Museum and senior curator of the Orange County Museum of Art.
His publications and exhibitions include Best Kept Secret: UCI and the Development of Contemporary Art in Southern California; Kustom Kulture: Von Dutch; Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Robert Williams and Others; Across the Street: Self-Help Graphics and Chicano Art in Los Angeles; Surf Culture: The Art History of Surfing; In the Land of Retinal Delights: The Juxtapoz Factor; and In Nature’s Temple: The Art and Life of William Wendt.
