Cannon Blast, Flag Ceremony to Conclude Constitution Day Celebration on Campus

By Logan Wilber |

LOGAN, Utah — Constitution Day festivities at Utah State University’s Logan Campus will culminate with a bang. On Tuesday, Sept. 17, a loud cannon blast will be heard across campus at 4:30 p.m. as part of a traditional flag retreat ceremony.

The afternoon cannon blast will signal the lowering of the flag for the day and will be accompanied by an audio rendition of “Retreat”, played for a ceremonious flag lowering at the TSC flagpoles next to the fountain. Army ROTC Soldiers and Air Force ROTC Airmen will be serving as Color Guard.

Late last month, Gov. Spencer J. Cox declared September 2024 as American Founders and Constitution Month, inviting Utahns to reflect on the importance of our nation’s Constitution.

“For more than two centuries, the U.S. Constitution has remained the framework through which we reconcile differing interests and peacefully progress as a nation,” Gov. Cox said. “The coming months will test our nation’s foundation, and I believe the Constitution that once united our nation can do so again. Now, more than ever, it is important to reflect on our founding principles and recognize the role each and every one of us plays in our constitutional republic.”

On Thursday, Sept. 19, all are welcome to attend Constitution Day with Boyd Matheson at 6 p.m. at the David B. Haight Center. The Emmy Award Winning Radio Host will discuss our nation’s founding principles at this inaugural event for the USU First Amendment Club. Those interested are asked to RSVP to attend.

Constitution Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the signing of the United States Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. This historic document outlines the framework of the U.S. government, including its legislative, executive and judicial branches.
