Conference for Hispanic Engineering Students Coming to USU

Engineering students from across the Western United States will gather in Logan this week for a regional conference aimed at helping emerging professionals better integrate into the engineering workforce.
The Utah State University student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or SHPE, host a three-day regional leadership development conference on the Logan campus March 26-28.
The purpose of the event, says USU SHPE President Jose Campos, is to help Hispanic engineering students connect with professionals in industry and academia, improve professional skills and build awareness of science, technology, engineering and math programs in the Hispanic community.
“Local chapter members have the opportunity to meet and connect with fellow SHPE members from other parts of the country,” said Campos. “The relationships built during this conference will last for a lifetime. Participants also receive instruction from our industry sponsors about how to prepare for the corporate world, and they’ll have the chance to seek employment opportunities.”
Organizers estimate there will be 110 student participants from Boise State University, Brigham Young University, New Mexico State University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Colorado Ft. Collins, Kansas State University, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Nebraska Lincoln, University of Utah, Utah State University and Wichita State University.
Campos said he hopes participants will be motivated to influence others to pursue a career in engineering or other technical field.
“The objective of this event is to inspire and motivate Hispanic engineering students so that they continue pursuing STEM careers,” he added. “Many Hispanics who start studying STEM majors often change their field of study or drop out of college altogether. By networking with Hispanic science and engineering professionals they can see that it’s possible to be successful even when the statistics suggest otherwise.”
Conference events will take place in the University Inn and Conference Center and nearby Taggart Student Center on the Logan campus. Location and registration information about the event is available online.
