First Cohort Selected for Aggie UP Program at Logan High School

Utah State University Admissions hosted students from Logan High School on May 8 for a dinner to kick off the first cohort of the Aggie UP program.
Aggie UP (Undergraduate Possibilities) is a new initiative between Logan City School District and Utah State. The program prepares first-generation college students for higher education. If selected, beginning their first year of high school, students receive mentorship from USU faculty, staff and students, attend exclusive campus events and tours, and gain early access to tailored university courses. By their senior year, they graduate college ready.
“Our goal is to work with students earlier to remove any potential barriers, should they choose to pursue higher education,” said Cyril Mensah, assistant director of Access & Multicultural Engagement at USU. “It is extremely exciting to see so many students interested in the program already. This is one more way Utah State is achieving its mission of access to education.”
The program is currently being piloted at Logan High School, with plans to expand to other schools in the future. USU works closely with counselors and other staff to market and run the program, as well as selecting the students each year.
“When the opportunity to partner in this endeavor arose, it was a no-brainer,” said Trudy Peterson, a counselor at Logan High. “Our staff were excited to be a part of this and help develop some of the curriculum and program so it could be tailored to our students. As counselors, we do all we can to ensure students are prepared for what comes after high school; this program gives us one more tool to help them succeed.”
The first Aggie UP cohort consists of 37 Logan High School freshmen selected from more than 80 applicants. Over the next three years of high school, these students will gain college-level course experience, learn more about the college application process, and automatically be admitted to Utah State after graduation.
