New Anadarko Air Quality Research Fellowship Open to All USU Students

Air quality is a major concern for many areas of Utah, including the Uintah Basin, where a combination of topography, snow cover and lower wintertime winds cause strong thermal inversions that trap pollutant emissions.

Thanks to an endowment from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, Utah State University students now have the opportunity to pursue research on this environmental challenge through a fellowship opportunity. The application process is now open for the newly established Anadarko Air Quality Research Fellowship at USU Uintah Basin’s Bingham Research Center. The deadline for applications for the fellowship, which is open to undergraduates and graduate students of any major, is Friday, March 16, 2018.

“This is a unique research opportunity that will allow participants to pursue efforts to improve understanding of and find solutions for the Uintah Basin’s air quality challenges, while tailoring their research projects to their academic interests,” says Seth Lyman, director of the Bingham Research Center and research associate professor in USU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

The fellowship’s research will be carried out in the Uintah Basin and based at the USU Uintah Basin campus in Vernal. Participating undergrads based at USU’s Logan campus or other regional campuses, will arrange to spend a summer or other semester of research in Vernal. Master’s or doctoral students may finish classes in Logan before relocating to Vernal to focus on thesis or dissertation research.
