Spark Ignited at Utah State Leads to International Adventure, Giving Back
By Maren Aller |
At Utah State University, amidst bustling student life, a story of resilience, dedication and giving back unfolded — woven into the very fabric of Bob ’64, ’66 MS, and DeAnn Fehlman’s lives.
“Utah State holds a special place in our hearts,” Bob said, his eyes light with the memories of youthful dreams and academic pursuits. “It was here where our journey began.”
For Bob, the path to success was paved with passion and perseverance. He knew that a college degree would be critical to his success and achieving his goals.
But it wasn’t just textbooks and lectures that shaped Bob’s collegiate experience. It was the serendipitous encounter with the German language that would leave an indelible mark on his life’s trajectory.
“As a child, I was fascinated by the melodic cadence of my grandparents’ native tongue,” he said, a hint of nostalgia tingeing his voice. “And it was here, at USU, where I reignited that flame of curiosity.”
During his time in high school in Malta, Idaho, Bob took a year of German and then began his studies at USU, before taking a break to serve a transformative Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mission to Germany. That 2½ year experience proved pivotal in Bob’s life, peeking his interest in German and international relations.
“It was a time of profound introspection,” Bob said. “The scars of war still marred the landscape in Germany, yet the resilience of the human spirit shone brightly. During this period, I came to understand the true essence of humanity. It was then that I became deeply intrigued and drawn to the complexities of the world stage.”
Upon his return to USU, Bob’s passion for political science and German studies only deepened. Under the tutelage of inspiring professors, he delved into the intricacies of international relations and the rich tapestry of German culture in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
“My time at USU laid the groundwork for my future endeavors,” Bob said. “It was here where I met the love of my life, DeAnn, who was an Aggiette, and where I forged lifelong friendships that would sustain me through the trials ahead.”
Armed with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in political science and a minor in German, Bob
embarked on a journey that would take him far beyond the confines of academia. From teaching at Western Wyoming College, to pursing an MBA in international business at Thunderbird Graduate school, his career trajectory was as diverse as it was illustrious.
But it was his foray into international banking with Security Pacific National Bank that truly set Bob on the path to success. From New York City to the historic cities of Europe, he navigated the complex world of finance with professionalism and confidence.
Following a transformative Fulbright Scholarship experience in Germany, Bob found himself immersed in the dynamic world of international banking, a realm that would become his professional home for over two decades. Germany, with its rich history and vibrant culture, became more than just a place of work — it became their home for the next 21 years and base for the exploration of Europe.
“As I delved into my role as an international banker, analyzing financial statements and country risk, DeAnn found her niche at Armed Forces Radio and Television Network Europe,” Bob said.
Weekends became the couple’s canvas for exploration, each journey a tapestry of discovery and connection. From quaint villages nestled in the Bavarian Alps to bustling marketplaces in Berlin, they savored the richness of European life, forging friendships that transcended borders and cultures.
As Bob’s career soared, navigating the intricate terrain of global finance, he and DeAnn found themselves in London, where he assumed the mantle of risk manager for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Shortly thereafter he was transferred back to Frankfurt to become Country Manager of Germany, Austria and Eastern Europe, visiting the eastern European capitals on a regular basis. He faced the crucible of leadership, in the restructuring of COOP AG, the largest corporate financial crisis in Germany since WWII.
“It was a time of testing, but also of growth, as I played a pivotal role in navigating the bank through turbulent waters and toward calmer shores,” Bob said.
Amidst the whirlwind of their professional endeavors, Bob and DeAnn remained unwavering in their dedication to family and community. They share a bond strengthened by their four children: Marcus and Marlayne, adopted during their time in Germany; Angie, born while briefly residing in California; and Tamara, born on their return to Germany. Whether volunteering at their children’s school, igniting a passion for learning in young minds, or leading fundraising initiatives for Bob’s hometown of Oakley, Idaho’s new museum, where they settled after returning from Europe, the couple epitomized a commitment to giving back.
For Robert, giving back meant contributing his time and talents. He served on the Fulbright Commission for eight years, an ambassadorial appointment; as Chairman of the Frankfurt International School Board; as Treasurer of the American Chamber of Commerce in Germany; and as a Counselor in the Frankfurt Servicemen’s Stake Presidency, among others. As a result of his many years of community service, he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz, Germany’s highest civilian award.
“For us, success transcended mere financial gains or professional accolades; it resided in the transformative impact we could make on those around us,” Bob said. “Every day presented fresh challenges and opportunities. Through it all, DeAnn remained my steadfast partner, a pillar of strength and unwavering support.”
The decision to give back to USU, to create the Robert Gustave and DeAnn Frank Fehlman German Lab in the Mehdi Heravi Global Learning and Teaching Center, was born out of a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education.
“We wanted to pay homage to the institution that shaped our lives,” Bob said. “USU gave us so much, and we wanted to give back in whatever way we could.”
Now, as they settle into their golden years, enjoying both Oakley, Idaho, and St. George, Utah, Bob and DeAnn’s legacy continues to inspire future generations of students to reach for the stars and never stop learning.
“Our hope is that our contribution will pave the way for countless others to pursue their dreams,” Bob said. “For true success is not measured by what we achieve for ourselves, but by the positive impact we have on others.”
