Statewide Campuses Students Present Research in Synchronized Symposium
By Marcus Jensen |
Various USU Statewide Campuses hosted a synchronized symposium showcasing the research of students throughout Utah.
Students taking classes at any USU Statewide campus were eligible to present their research, either in oral or poster form at the Statewide Student Research Symposium was on April 11.
“Research is in our DNA at USU and at our Statewide Campuses,” said James Taylor, vice president for Statewide Campuses. “It was so exciting to see the number of participants at our Statewide Research Symposium. The efforts of so many staff at many Statewide Campuses is appreciated, the mentorship of dedicated faculty valued, and the organizational work of Dr. Seth Lyman a spark and catalyst for success. I was so thrilled to see the quality and quantity of research topics and look forward to growth and expansion of this event next year.
The Statewide Student Research Symposium is a sister event for the Student Research Symposium, which was hosted on the USU Logan Campus on April 8-9. It is an opportunity for USU students doing research across the state to present to their peers, faculty and the general public.
The symposium featured online elements connecting all campuses at once. Seth Lyman, research professor and director of the Bingham Research Center at USU Uintah Basin, gave opening remarks. Taylor and Alexa Sand, associate vice president for research, also addressed students. The students then presented their research at their respective campuses for all to hear. Organizers were pleased to see so many students participate and share their research.
“Our committee wanted to find a way to bring together students and faculty across the Statewide system, without creating the burden of having to travel,” said Lyman, who was one of the people spearheading the event. “We decided to hold an online lightning talk session, combined with in-person poster sessions at several campuses. The response we got exceeded our expectations, with students presenting from all of USU’s major Statewide campuses. It was so exciting to see students and faculty celebrating research together across the whole state of Utah.”
The student oral presentations were 3-4 minutes long and combined lasted for about an hour. Students presented from Brigham City, Price, Moab, Blanding, Tooele, Vernal and Salt Lake City. Poster sessions then took place at USU campuses in Price, Moab and Vernal.
