Uintah Basin Professor Lends Expertise in Virtual Reintegrating Biology Initiative
Utah State University Uintah Basin Associate Professor in Biology Charles Hanifin joined 400 researchers from across the country for two and a half days in Austin, Texas to take part in the Reintegrating Biology Initiative. The initiative leverages technology to transform the biological sciences. Hanifin was one of 50 participants chosen for the Austin event.
“It was a great opportunity to collaborate with other biologists in subdisciplines to identify new research that can be done by working together, tapping into each scientists’ unique perspective,” said Hanifin. “The goal is for each of us to explore these agreed-upon research topics and then report on what we found, hopefully to make new discoveries and make progress in biology.”
By engaging multiple biological disciplines, they hope to determine the key challenges and scientific gaps that must be addressed, and the physical infrastructure and workforce training needed to do so. The workshop was held in Atlanta, Austin, San Diego and virtually online in four simultaneous Jumpstart meetings.
The project is funded by the National Science Foundation through a grant to the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and Knowinnovation.
