Old Main Society Awards
The Old Main Society was established in 1967 to recognize those seeking to continue the tradition of excellence at Utah State University by providing gifts that enhance funding from the state, research grants and other sources. The event celebrates current Old Main Society members, as well as new inductees, whose generosity ensures the future success of Utah State University and the students it serves.
This year’s festivities will include a reception welcoming 156 new members into the Old Main Society, joining more than 3,600 fellow Aggies. The university will also recognize 108 current members who will move up to new giving levels.
Spirit of Old Main: Carrie and Jim Madden
Carrie and Jim Madden have exemplified the very essence of the Spirit of Old Main in the face of unimaginable tragedy. Following the devastating loss of their daughter, MacKenzie, while she was a student at Utah State University in 2014, Carrie and Jim responded with extraordinary generosity, resilience and love.
The Maddens established the MacKenzie Madden Memorial Endowment just days after their daughter’s death, creating a legacy that reflects MacKenzie’s passion for learning and her commitment to helping others. In the years since, their support has transformed the lives of countless students, raising more than $70,000 and inspiring others to give. Recently, Carrie and Jim documented an estate gift to the scholarship, ensuring that MacKenzie’s legacy will endure for generations to come.
Their contributions extend far beyond financial generosity. As avid supporters of USU, the Maddens’ love for the university permeates every aspect of their lives. They proudly display Aggie spirit in their Idaho Falls home, flying the USU flag and covering their vehicles with Aggie decals. They’ve become advocates for raising awareness about domestic violence, participating in events like local fundraisers and tote drives to support victims.
Carrie has also become a voice for change, sharing MacKenzie’s story to inspire hope and action. Her courage and determination have helped to illuminate the path forward for others navigating grief and tragedy. Together, the Maddens have shown that even in the darkest moments, humanity’s capacity for love and generosity can shine brightly.
Carrie and Jim’s unwavering commitment to education, service and philanthropy exemplifies the values at the heart of the Spirit of Old Main. Their profound generosity and selfless dedication embody the legacy of compassion and community that defines Utah State University. On this poignant 10th anniversary of MacKenzie’s passing, USU is honored to present Carrie and Jim Madden with the Spirit of Old Main Award, recognizing their extraordinary ability to transform heartbreak into hope and their lasting impact on the Aggie family.
Emeriti Old Main: Marion R. Hyde
For more than 34 years, Marion R. Hyde dedicated his life to Utah State University’s Department of Art, inspiring generations of students and faculty alike. As an artist, educator and department head for 12 of those years, Marion’s influence remains evident in the thriving art community he helped build.
A true son of Utah, Marion was born in Tremonton in 1938. His path to art was anything but linear. Early in his academic journey, he explored pre-med, pre-law and history before discovering his true calling in art. Once he found his passion, he never looked back. He earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1962 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1969 from Utah State University, dedicating his life to artistic pursuits.
His career at USU was marked by versatility. From teaching painting and drawing to printmaking and sculpture, Marion’s adaptability made him a vital member of the faculty. He was known for his ability to teach nearly every discipline within the art department — a rare and invaluable trait. While serving as department head, he supported his colleagues and helped advance the department’s vision for the future.
Even after his retirement in 2002, Marion’s artistic production accelerated. As a full-time artist, he embraced the Utah landscape as a wellspring of inspiration. His works in oil, pastel and woodcut printmaking captured the sublime and mysterious beauty of nature. From scenes of Logan River Trail to images inspired by Park City’s ghost-town era, Marion’s art was displayed in exhibitions at the Eccles Community Art Center, Brigham City Museum-Gallery, and the Bountiful/Davis Art Center. His “Reflections on a Landscape” remains a testament to his capacity to find wonder in the untamed.
Beyond his creative contributions, Marion’s legacy is rooted in generosity. He established two endowed scholarships at USU to support aspiring artists, ensuring that future generations would have the opportunity to pursue their passion, just as he did. Two of his pieces, Nesting (2001) and Night Muse (1988), are part of the Springville Museum of Art’s permanent collection, further cementing his impact on Utah’s artistic heritage.
Marion’s work was recognized through solo exhibitions at the Kimball Art Center, Plum Tree Gallery, and North Hennepin College in Minnesota. He also participated in national print shows in Connecticut and at Trenton State College. His significant commissions included a striking triptych mural at USU — a reflection of his deep connection to the university’s artistic and educational mission.
Marion’s journey — from all-state football player at Box Elder High School to award-winning artist — was as dynamic as the landscapes he portrayed. His influence extended well beyond the classroom and the canvas.
For his contributions to education, generosity and selfless service, Utah State University proudly presents the late Marion R. Hyde with the Emeriti of Old Main Award. His work and spirit embody the heritage of USU — creative, boundless and enduring. The university is grateful to Marion’s family for accepting this award on his behalf, celebrating his remarkable life and legacy.
New Generation Old Main: James and Heather Bohm
Driven by heartfelt dedication and a generous spirit, James and Heather Bohm embody the essence of Utah State University’s New Generation of Old Main Award. Their extraordinary support of USU Athletics, particularly their leadership in funding the Gymnastics Facility, has left an indelible mark on the university and its student-athletes.
A former student-athlete, James’ connection to USU runs deep. As a member of the Aggie football team from 2003 to 2007, James’s dedication on the field earned him the prestigious Joe E. Whitesides Honor. Additionally, he was recognized as Academic All-Conference in three of his four years: 2004-2005 in the Sunbelt Conference and 2006-2008 in the Western Athletic Conference. He graduated with dual bachelor’s degrees in finance and economics from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business in 2007, followed by an MBA in 2008. Today, he serves as vice president and senior financial consultant at Charles Schwab, where he applies 16 years of industry experience and a host of certifications, including Certified Financial Planner, to help others achieve their financial goals. Despite his professional success, James’s commitment to his alma mater remains constant. He is a proud member of the Old Main Society and enjoys spending time with their two children, traveling, golfing and attending as many Aggie games as possible.
Heather’s legacy as a student-athlete is equally inspiring. A standout on USU’s gymnastics team, she claimed the all-around title against Brigham Young University with a career-best score of 39.100, and she was named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week in March 2010. A dedicated student, Heather was a Whitesides Scholar all four years and earned Academic All-Western Athletic Conference honors throughout her collegiate career. Beyond the gym, Heather completed a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business in 2010. Her professional journey included roles as a data analyst and BI analyst, before she shifted focus to raising their two children. Heather’s commitment to athletics continues through her participation in multiple 5K races and her encouragement of healthy, active living for her family.
Together, James and Heather have established a legacy of giving back. Their significant contributions to the gymnastics program were instrumental in the creation of a state-of-the-art gymnastics locker room at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) Building on USU’s Logan campus. Complete with 22 lockers, a lounge, and a study area, the facility also features the James and Heather Bohm Nutrition Room — a lasting testament to their dedication to student-athletes’ wellbeing. Their generosity enables current and future gymnasts to fuel, study and prepare for success, both on and off the mat.
James and Heather Bohm’s remarkable commitment to USU Athletics reflects their enduring belief in the power of opportunity and education. For their contributions, they are honored as recipients of the New Generation of Old Main Award — a tribute to their profound impact on Utah State University and its student-athletes for generations to come.

Distinguished Service Award: Shari Badger
For more than four decades, Shari Badger has exemplified the spirit of service, leadership and community engagement. As co-founder of Lee’s Marketplace, Shari’s influence extends beyond grocery store aisles — it permeates the communities she serves and strengthens the institutions she supports.
In 1981, Shari and her late husband Lee Badger embarked on a bold journey, purchasing Jack’s Foodtown in Smithfield, Utah. Over the next decade, they remodeled and expanded the store, eventually opening the first Lee’s Marketplace in 1994. From a single 9,000-square-foot shop, Lee’s Marketplace grew into a thriving regional chain of nine full-service grocery stores and three Lee’s Ace Hardware stores, providing employment and opportunity to hundreds of Utahns. Today, Shari’s son, Jonathan, leads the company as president and CEO, continuing the legacy of family-centered business values.
Under Shari’s stewardship, Lee’s Marketplace has become synonymous with quality, community care and customer service. The stores are known for their fresh products, innovative concepts and commitment to a “You’ve got a friend at Lee’s” approach to customer care. Shari’s hands-on leadership, paired with her relentless pursuit of excellence, helped build a brand that prioritizes people over profit. In recognition of her remarkable achievements, Shari received the prestigious Donald P. Lloyd Spirit of Independents award from Associated Foods in 2022, honoring her as the outstanding retailer of the year.
Shari has served or continues to serve on several prestigious boards, including the Utah Festival Opera Board, the Associated Food Stores Board (for 12 years), the Intermountain Healthcare Logan Board, and the Sunshine Terrace Board. She also chairs the Lee’s Marketplace Board of Directors, where her visionary leadership continues to guide the company’s growth and success.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Shari’s philanthropic reach is felt across Cache Valley and the state of Utah. She has supported charitable organizations, food banks, local schools and nonprofit causes. Through the Lee’s Cares Foundation, she honors the memory of her husband Lee and advances research for ALS, the disease that took his life in 2009. The foundation’s annual golf tournament has raised significant funds to support groundbreaking research, including the development of a highly accurate blood test for ALS diagnosis, a major advancement in the field.
Shari’s impact on higher education is equally profound. From 2013 to 2024, she served with distinction on the Utah State University Foundation Board, providing thoughtful guidance and championing initiatives that advanced the university’s mission. Her leadership and generosity earned her the Alumni Hall of Honor award in 2016 — a fitting tribute to her enduring support of USU.
Her vision, work ethic and compassion have left a lasting imprint on every community she touches. Shari has not only helped grow a successful business but has also shaped lives — mentoring employees who rose from entry-level positions to management roles, supporting families through philanthropy and fostering a legacy of service. Her influence is seen in the enduring strength of the Lee’s Marketplace brand, the expanded horizons of students at Utah State University, and the life-changing research advances made possible by her generosity.
