USU Guitar Ensembles to Showcase Diverse Musical Styles in Annual Concert

By Emma Lee |

LOGAN, Utah — The Guitar Ensembles Program will host its annual concert, featuring an array of styles and genres performed by student ensembles. The concert will take place on Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

“The Guitar Ensembles concert has always been an eclectic program. There will be acoustic and electric guitar music presented covering everything from classical, folk, jazz, blues and rock styles,” said Guitar Professor Corey Christiansen. “Also, some of the compositions and arrangements are originals from the students in the ensembles.”

The program will feature four ensembles: The Acoustic Guitar Ensemble, two Electric Guitar Ensembles, and the Graduate Research Guitar Ensemble.

Students in the Graduate Research Guitar Ensemble will also perform some of their own original compositions and arrangements.

“The performance gives students an opportunity to perform the materials and concepts they have been working on all semester,” Christiansen said. “Knowing there will be a live performance generally motivates students to practice more as well.”

Guitar Ensembles is a valuable learning experience for students and gives them the chance to share their semester-long hard work with audiences.

“I just love hearing how the students have improved,” Christiansen said. “I also love hearing how their arrangements have evolved, and I get to enjoy seeing the satisfaction they receive from hearing their own arrangements played.”

Students will perform on guitars of many different forms including acoustic, nylon string, electric, arch top guitar and more, providing audiences with a unique listening experience.

“Guitar is the most popular instrument in the world and this concert will showcase so many styles and genres of music that can be played on the guitar,” Christiansen said. “There will be something for everyone at this concert.”
