USU Uintah Basin Hosts Second Annual STEAM Expo

ROOSEVELT, Utah — More than 1,300 students descended upon Utah State University Uintah Basin’s Roosevelt campus for the second annual STEAM Expo on Oct. 2-3. Students in grades 5th-8th participated in the event, which aims to foster excitement for math, science and the arts.
“We had about 1,300 students from Duchesne and Uintah County schools along with many homeschool students and about 30 different exhibitors for the expo,” said Don Busenbark, assistant department head of mathematics and statistics for Statewide Campuses and one of the leaders of the expo. “Students were able to learn about fossils, drones, art, oil careers and technology, building trades, engineering, health, CPR, fire, police, coding, chemistry, robotics, animals, etc.”
David Law, associate vice president for USU Uintah Basin, was excited to host the event for its second year. He loved to see so many people on campus, because the event brings more people to campus than any other event outside of commencement.
“The STEAM Expo is an excellent opportunity to fulfill our land-grant mission and bring educational opportunities to our local communities,” Law said. “In addition to the sheer number of students who attended the event, what impressed me most was that the exhibitors engaged the students in experiential learning. These students enjoyed the deep learning that occurred as they were exposed to real-life problems and solutions.”
The feedback from students was extremely positive, with students saying how fun and engaging the presentations were. Teachers also appreciated the opportunity for their students to learn so much about so many different subjects.
More than 30 organizations as well as many USU faculty presented at the expo, leading workshops, booths, presentations, and tours of the USU Uintah Basin campus.
The third annual STEAM Expo has already been announced for Oct. 1-2, 2026.
