Utah State Theatre Brings Family-Friendly 'Seussical the Musical' to USU

Those who learned to read with “The Cat in the Hat” won’t want to miss the next play to bounce onto the stage at Utah State University presented by the Department of Theatre Arts at the Caine College of the Arts.

Seussical the Musical is an inventive medley of Dr. Seuss’ finest stories combined with imaginative music.

“The show is full of magic, surprise and delight, with music as wonderful as all your favorite Seuss stories,” Vanessa Ballam, director of Seussical the Musical said.

The production runs Oct. 28-30 and Nov. 3-6 in the Morgan Theatre of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Utah State University campus. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. for all dates, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 30.

Seussical is full of characters most already know and love, including The Cat in the Hat, Horton, the Whos, Mayzie and Gertrude McFuzz. Seussical combines many stories from the Dr. Seuss material.

Ballam, who is also a faculty member in USU’s Theatre Arts Department, assures everyone will find a piece of “their own story” in this production.

“Our production was specifically designed for children,” said Jason West, who plays the Cat in the Hat. “It is a pure production that is great for children’s attention span.”

Seussical is more than a typical family show; there really is something for everyone,” Ballam said. “Mom and Dad will love it as much as the children.”

Join the UST cast for a walk down memory lane as it visits the Jungle of Nool and Circus McGurkus.

Suessical is inventive and unique,” West said.

Tickets prices are $13 for general admission, $11 for USU faculty and staff, $9 for non-USU students and free for USU students with ID. A family discount is available for groups of four or more. The price per ticket for the family discount is $8 each and one adult must be present.

Tickets can be purchased at the Caine College of the Arts Box Office in the Chase Fine Arts Center, Room 139-B, or at the Caine College of the Arts Dean’s Office Box Office, open 10a.m.-5 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased online or by phone, 435-797-8022.

“Filled with a cast of fun-loving characters and your favorite Seuss stories, Seussical the Musical promises to awaken your imagination,” Ballam said.

Seussical the Musical is rated “E for Everyone” by the Caine College of the Arts’ rating system. Anyone over the age of 5 is admitted. More information about the Caine College of the Arts rating system is available online, look under the “Events” tab for “Rating System.”
