The Utah State University Wasatch Region is proud to have celebrated the class of 2025 on Friday, May 9. The class of 2025 consists of individuals earning 527 degrees/certificates: 65 associate, 240 bachelor’s, 147 master’s, 9 doctorate degrees, and 57 undergraduate and 9 graduate certificates. The USU Salt Lake campus hosted Wasatch Region graduates for the celebration.

Jana Beckstead, director of student services, welcomed the graduates and their families and offered opening remarks. She then introduced the two student speakers: Lenora Monge and Jared Fernandez.

Monge spoke on her “nontraditional” college experience, being a first-generation graduate and a mother of four. As she went through her college journey, Monge shared how her college education helped change her life.

“As I was working towards my degree, it helped me see something I wouldn't if I hadn't

started,” she said. “I was able to see that it was time for me to change my horizon. I changed employers and am working towards what I love- helping others from all different communities and backgrounds.”

Monge closed her remarks congratulating her fellow graduates and encouraging them to celebrate each milestone they reach. She will continue her education pursuing a master’s degree in library science.

Fernandez then gave his speech, opening by giving his prior background: four years on a baseball scholarship at the College of Eastern Utah and Fresno State and 14 years playing professional baseball. After retiring from professional sports, he had jobs as a loan officer and real estate professional before starting his own business. Fernandez encouraged the graduates to always chase their dreams.

“I have always done what is on my mind and never thought about obstacles that would possibly get in the way of achieving my dream,” he said. “If you have an idea, pursue it. Don’t let anything stand in your way. Just stay focused and accomplish your goals without hesitation.”

After being away from school for 31 years, Fernandez returned to finish the college degree he put on hold. He closed by saying it is never too late to accomplish your dreams and to ignore all the naysayers.

The graduates then heard remarks from the Ryan Dent, president elect of the USU Alumni Advisory Board. Dent welcomed the graduates into the alumni association and congratulated them on their accomplishment.

“As representatives of USU, there's a high bar set for you,” Dent said. “Show competence, kindness, and hard work in everything you do, because that's what being an Aggie is all about. Whether you decide to put a Utah State license plate on your car or get involved with your Aggie Alumni chapter, make the most of every chance to honor the great tradition of Utah State University.”

David Vernon, senior associate vice president for the Wasatch Region closed the ceremony with brief remarks, and the graduates celebrated receiving their diplomas.

“Graduates, think about how far you've come since joining the Aggie family — where you started, the challenges you've overcome, and the person you've become,” Vernon said. “Reflect on the friendships you've formed, the community you've built, and the impact you've made — both seen and unseen. Each of you has a powerful story — one of hard work, sacrifice, and persistence, all fueled by your hope for a better future.”
