About This Degree
The Applied Sciences, Technology, and Education (ASTE) faculty welcome a diverse group of students seeking to improve education.
The PhD program prepares candidates for academic careers in formal and nonformal settings that demand research expertise and an understanding of the theoretical foundations. Accepted applicants will work collaboratively with faculty and other students to increase their research, program development, and teaching abilities.
What You Will Learn
The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Ph.D. program is a four-year online program requiring 3-4 synchronous sessions in online courses (TBD by professor and student schedules), and the face-to-face participation on the Logan campus for one-week (second week of July) for three consecutive summers. These summer meetings allow students to complete additional CTE Ph.D. Professional Competency Requirements. Most students in the program take two-three classes (6-9 credits) per semester.

Admission Requirements
Application Process
Applications are due May 1. Application documents are submitted to the School of Graduate Studies. The required documentation for the application package is noted on the ASTE Graduate Admission and Application webpage. Students are admitted each year for a fall start; however, students are encouraged to take any required prerequisite courses the summer before the fall start. Any required prerequisite courses will be noted in your acceptance letter. Typically, students who have not had an undergraduate statistics course in the past five years, and/or score below the 40th percentile on the quantitative portion of the GRE will be required to take PSY/EDUC 3010 (Statistics for the Social Sciences) or an equivalent online statistics course. Consult the USU Academic and Registration Calendar for additional semester begin and end dates.
Application Package
Applications must completed and submitted to the School of Graduate Studies. Meeting the eligibility and minimum admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Complete the admissions application form and pay the application fee through the School of Graduate Studies website. The application package you submit to the School of Graduate Studies for department consideration will require:
- Three email addresses of individuals who will complete a letter of recommendation for you. Once you have completed the online application and paid the application fee, the School of Graduate Studies will send a link to a form via email to the e-mail addresses you have provided. Recommendation forms will be completed online and submitted electronically.
- Your official transcript(s) from each previously attended college and/or university, except USU. Admission requires a minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 90 quarter or 60 semester credits earned.
- A statement of purpose concerning why you would like to earn a graduate degree.
- A current resume or vita.
