About This Certificate
The Corrections Certificate is a 9-credit program designed to give students a strong foundation in correctional systems and the experiences of justice-involved individuals.
Through three required courses—CJ 1300, CJ 4310, and SW 4920—students explore correctional practices, inmate rights, and the impact of trauma. While only the core courses are required, students may choose to take additional electives to expand their knowledge.
This certificate provides solid preparation for students interested in working in a correctional setting and with incarcerated individuals.
What You Will Learn
Students will gain a clear understanding of how correctional systems operate, the laws that guide inmate rights, and the effects of trauma on individuals within these systems.
CJ 1300 introduces correctional history, administration, and reform; CJ 4310 examines constitutional protections and legal issues in corrections; and SW 4920 focuses on trauma, coping, and resilience. Together, these courses provide a concise but comprehensive overview of the corrections field.
