About This Certificate

This certificate introduces students to the foundational concepts and professional expectations of modern policing.

Students complete three courses totaling nine credit hours, beginning with the required course CJ 1390 Introduction to Policing, which examines the structure, purpose, and day-to-day functions of police organizations. Two electives are required from CJ 1330 Criminal Law, CJ 1340 Criminal Investigations, or SW 4925 Resilience and Human Flourishing, allowing you to tailor the certificate toward legal knowledge, investigative skills, or personal resilience.

What You Will Learn

Students will explore the role of police in society, studying organizational culture, community engagement, and major challenges such as technology, corruption, violence, and use of force.

By integrating concepts from policing, criminal law, investigative work, and resilience science, students will learn strategies to manage stress, improve decision-making, and maintain personal well-being in high-pressure policing environments.
