Inclusive excellence at USU is an ongoing practice to expand access to higher education and outreach programs, support academic success and individual readiness for post-graduation endeavors, facilitate engagement in scholarly activities, encourage respectful dialogue and the exchange of diverse viewpoints, and foster a campus climate conducive to belonging. All practices are anchored in USU’s Principles of Community. With an integrated network of support and partnership across colleges and community members, our collaborative efforts can contribute to a campus culture that values every individual in all academic and community-life aspects.
Inclusive Excellence in Practice

Teaching Excellence
Faculty play a crucial role in student's experiences and on overall campus culture. Utilizing varied pedagogy ensures that all students have the opportunity to succeed and excel. At USU instructors are engaged in ongoing evidence-based professional development that encourages a student-centered approach and fosters more inclusive learning environments. College Readiness
A key aspect of inclusive excellence is increasing college readiness for high school students. GEAR UP at Utah State University is a part of the larger Statewide GEAR UP Education Program, and partners with local high schools to help low-income students be successful in school.
Student Support
Student success and support programs offer personalized coaching, first-generation mentoring, and supplemental instruction, faculty mentoring, early research opportunities, and peer learning communities to meet students where they are academically.
Student Resources
USU’s student affairs units offer engaging activities, workshops, events, and services that support student belonging and overall well-being. For a full list of on campus and community resources available to students visit our student resource page.
Student Organizations
USU’s student-run organizations serve as dynamic catalysts for shaping the culture of our campuses. They provide a sense of belonging and understanding, helping to bridge the gap between individual experiences and the broader college community. In doing so, they contribute to a more inclusive and supportive campus environment. They also function as support networks for our students, offering mentorship and guidance to members navigating the complexities of college life.
Experiential Learning
USU’s study abroad programs, internships, undergraduate research, and other experiential learning initiatives in the academic colleges offer unique experiences that broaden students' worldview and support their post-graduation career goals.
Civic Engagement
The Center for Community Engagement, Latinx Cultural Center, proposed Native American Cultural Center, and other initiatives at USU develop active citizens through community engagement, scholarship, and fostering cultural exchange. These initiatives empower students to explore civic identity and develop leadership skills. They sponsoring campus dialogues, symposia, speakers, and visiting lecturers, contributing to the exchange of diverse viewpoints and provide opportunities to bridge differences and create belonging.
Leadership Development
Utah State University’s leadership programs foster development in higher education administration through hands-on training in policy, budget, organizational management, and more. The Utah Presidential Leadership Program (UPL) and President’s Leadership Academy (PLA) offer immersive opportunities for emerging leaders in Humanities, Arts, and Libraries to connect, learn, and lead.
