USU Fraternity & Sorority Life Relationship Agreement
The Relationship Agreement (RA) is a formal document that outlines the expectations, responsibilities, and benefits for fraternities and sororities recognized by Utah State University. It ensures these organizations meet certain standards in exchange for university support, resources, and recognition that off-campus groups don’t receive. Updated and signed annually, the agreement helps keep our community aligned with national best practices and the evolving needs of our students.
The agreement can be viewed and downloaded in its entirety here.
Warning About Unrecognized Groups
Fraternities or sororities that are not affiliated with or recognized by Utah State University have not signed the FSL Relationship Agreement and do not follow the same safety, accountability, or conduct standards. These groups operate without university oversight, putting students at greater risk for unsafe behavior, hazing, and lack of support. We recommend joining recognized organizations that are committed to student well-being and university values.

Commonly Asked Questions
Does my student need to live in a chapter house?
Not all chapters have houses, and for those that do, living in the chapter facility is often encouraged but not always required. Each chapter has its own policies, and your student will receive detailed housing information during the recruitment process.
How much does it cost to be in a fraternity or sorority?
Costs vary by chapter, but dues typically include national fees, chapter operations, social events, and other member benefits. Chapters are committed to transparency and will provide financial information upfront during recruitment.
Is it all about partying and drinking?
Absolutely not. While social events are part of any college experience, our FSL community also prioritizes academics, leadership, service, and personal growth. All events follow policies found in the FSL Relationship Agreement and promote a safe, responsible environment.
Is hazing a concern?
Our chapters and councils strictly adhere to the USU Hazing Policy. Any concerns should be reported immediately. There is no excuse for the harm hazing can cause.
Will my student’s grades suffer if they join?
Not at all. In fact, FSL members typically perform on par academically than their peers, all while being more involved on campus, building leadership experience, and expanding their networks. Chapters actively support academic success through structured study time, peer mentorship, and GPA accountability standards.
Is my student safe in Fraternity & Sorority Life?
Student safety is our top priority. We work closely with each chapter to provide education, training, and accountability to maintain a respectful, secure environment for all members.
Can my student still be involved in other campus activities?
Definitely. Many FSL members are also leaders in student government, clubs, athletics, and other organizations. FSL actually encourages broader campus involvement.
What is the time commitment like?
Like any leadership or involvement opportunity, there is a time commitment, but students are supported in balancing academics, work, and chapter responsibilities. Depending on what leadership positions your student elects to inherit also will play a major role in how much time may be required.
What kind of support system will my student have?
Fraternity and sorority members often describe their chapter as a home away from home. Through mentorship, leadership, and shared experiences, your student will gain a strong support network.
What happens after college?
FSL offers lifelong benefits. Members gain access to a powerful alumni network, leadership development, and lasting friendships that often extend well beyond graduation.
