Improve Public Health Through Veterinary Science

Our Master of Public Health (MPH) in Veterinary Public Health degree provides interdisciplinary training that integrates veterinary sciences with core public health principles. You will develop essential skills to monitor and control public health threats by understanding disease transmission among humans, animals, and the environment and receive specialized training in the emerging public health discipline of One Health. Through a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience, you will emerge as a leader ready to make meaningful contributions to the field of veterinary public health.

The land-grant mission of Utah State University provides unique resources for you to study the relationship between human and animal health with the College of Veterinary Medicine, agricultural extension programs, Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories, and the Institute for Antiviral Research. The 100% online aspect of the program allows you to complete the program from anywhere around the world. Our program is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and can be pursued part-time or full-time.

Learn from Experts in Veterinary Public Health

The College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences fosters an interdisciplinary approach to public health education and research. Our faculty are recognized experts with extensive experience in veterinary public health. Many of our faculty have or have held previous positions in the field in areas such as practicing veterinarians, the veterinary vaccine industry, and veterinary diagnostic laboratories, which enables them to seamlessly integrate their practical insights, professional networks, and field experiences into the classroom to enrich students’ learning experiences.

Mirella Meyer-Ficca

Associate Professor

"The Veterinary and Nutrition MPH program opens many career avenues to professionals with a passion for the wellbeing of humans, animals, and of our environment. It is a great way of expanding your horizon to the important and emerging global health problems of our times. You will learn how to use scientific approaches to study and solve them, how to use scientific insights to design preventative measures that mitigate health threats across species and ecosystems, and importantly, how to efficiently communicate health-related topics to all stakeholders. For me, it was exciting and rewarding to have a student take MPH classes, join my laboratory, where they performed hands-on scientific research studies on effects of various diets on obesity and reproductive health for their MPH thesis project, and then see them go to international scientific conferences to present their data!"

Dr. Chloe Stenkamp-Strahm

Adjunct Instructor

"With climate change and evolving animal agriculture practices, the need for public health practitioners that have veterinary knowledge is high. As a veterinarian treating animals, I can both see and appreciate the dynamics of zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease spread in animal populations. Bringing these real-world examples to class helps students better understand the need behind their training and exposes them to the problems they may eventually work to solve after graduation."

Student Feedback

We strive to create a community where co-curricular experiences strengthen and broaden student learning inside and outside of the classroom.

The online structure of the MPH program was central to my success in graduating with my MPH. The courses focusing on One Health were my absolute favorite, and I learned many skills, including improving my writing skills. I've even been able to publish one of the essays I wrote for an assignment! The professors are easy to contact and quick to respond and invite questions and conversation.

Ashley Sheesley

Being a student in the veterinary MPH program has been a great experience. Since the classes are all online, it offers the flexibility to move through the program at your own pace. All the professors did a fantastic job facilitating applicable coursework that could be individualized to fit each student's field of interest. After going through the program, I feel like I have prepared for a successful career in veterinary public health.

Veterinary Public Health Curriculum Preview

This course is designed to introduce the student to the core concepts and historical background underlying the emerging discipline of One Health. It will provide a broad overview of the key issues in this field using relevant examples to illustrate the major problems and challenges. In particular, it will explore the inter-disciplinary nature of One Health and the role of the key actors within this framework. The course will contribute to a better understanding of emerging disease dynamics and the role of One Health in addressing emerging disease threats. The list of topics will include a discussion of bidirectional impact of animal health on human health, the impact of earth’s changing ecology on health, issues of food and water security and the benefits of comparative medicine.
This course encourages students to explore the complexity of relationships between changes in the environment, pathogenicity and distribution of organisms, and changing distributions of human beings and animals, within the context of global climate change, global trade, and political unrest.
This course covers practical applications of epidemiology for veterinary medicine and public health. Topics include a summary of epidemiologic data, outbreak investigation, questionnaire design, sample size calculations, diagnostic test evaluation, study design, and introductions to risk analysis and disease modeling.
The practicum gives MPH students the opportunity to integrate and apply classroom learning with professional, real-world work experience.  Students have the option to complete their practicum course requirement at one of many local, national, or international health organizations.
