Affordability

Undergraduate Cost of Attendance

Paying for college can be a source of apprehension for both parents and students. Let us take some of the mystery out of the process by explaining the charges you can expect.

Learn more at USU Financial Support.

Tuition & Fees

Each year, the university publishes a tuition and fee table that outlines charges based on credit hours. This includes tuition and student fees for campus services.

Fees per Credit

  • Credits 1-11: Cost Varies
  • 12-18 Credits: $258.07
  • More than 19 credits: Cost Varies

Resident Tuition

  • Credits 1-11: Cost Varies
  • 12-18 Credits: $3,915.52*
  • More than 19 credits: Cost Varies

Non-Resident Tuition

  • Credits 1-11: Cost Varies
  • 12-18 Credits: $12,354.68**
  • More than 19 credits: Cost Varies

Credit Load

Because 12-18 credits are the same price, students can save thousands of dollars in tuition and fees by taking 15 credits each semester, rather than 12. Every student is different, but overall, students who take 15 credits have higher GPAs than those who take fewer.

Credits Resident
12 Credits Per Semester (5 Years) $43,895.90
15 Credits Per Semester (4 Years) $35,116.72
Difference $8,799.18

Complete the FAFSA as early as possible to help you plan financially for the upcoming school year and meet tuition deadlines. The application is free and online at fafsa.gov. Federal Aid Counselors can answer questions about federal aid, and help you and your student navigate the process of paying for college.

Scholarships

With a few exceptions, incoming student scholarships have been awarded by the time Aggie Orientation begins. Incoming students were awarded scholarships according to the parameters listed on the admissions page, provided they applied to USU by the deadline. Incoming and continuing students can apply for USU college and departmental scholarships, as well as third-party private awards, by accessing the USU General Scholarship Application.

Students can check with their local city offices, financial institutions, and employers to see if they offer scholarships.

Student Employment

The Career Design Center oversees student employment and helps students find on-campus, off-campus, and work-study jobs through the Aggie Handshake link in the MyUSU portal. We recommend full-time students work no more than 20 hours per week in order to maintain balance.

FERPA

Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA is a U.S. federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records. FERPA protects your student’s rights by ensuring we don’t release any information to anyone without their consent; that includes you, as parents and guardians. In order for you to have access to this information, your student will need to go to USU MyID, and assign you as a delegate. For more information, please visit the website above.

Delegates

As a supporter, in order to contact any university office and request student information, you must be a delegate. A delegate is especially useful for, but not limited to, students who may be taking a leave of absence from the university for church or military service. If your student plans to take a leave of absence, a delegate can assist them in making a smooth transition back to USU by acting on their behalf.

The adding, changing, or removing of a security phrase and/or delegates is the sole responsibility of the student.

What Can Delegates Do?

A delegate may act on a student’s behalf at USU, which means a delegate may:

  • Have full access to the student's information.
  • Change or update the student's information, including their password, and add an additional Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) method.
  • Access the student's information in Banner, including their grades and finances, and add or drop classes on the student's behalf.

USU Student Association (USUSA)

Every student at USU is a member of the student association. As such, they can actively participate in all activities, committees, clubs, events, and initiatives. Participation fosters a sense of belonging and community, develops skills highly sought after by employers, and encourages personal growth and exploration beyond academics. USUSA is an organization made by the students, for the students.

CARE Office: Comprehensive Student Support

The CARE (Connect, Assist, Refer, Empower) Office is here to help students navigate challenges that may arise during their college journey. Whether facing personal hardships, financial concerns, food insecurity, or needing access to healthcare and mental health resources, the CARE Team provides guidance and connects students to appropriate campus and community services.

Center for Community: Building Connections

The Center for Community is a space dedicated to helping students build deep connections with campus and local communities, fostering student involvement and a strong sense of belonging at USU.

The Center for Community cultivates goodwill and greater understanding by providing opportunities to engage with diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives through educational programs, celebrations, and meaningful exchanges.

It is also home to the Native American Cultural Program and Latinx Cultural Program, which provide cultural education, celebration, engagement, and awareness programming.

You can learn more about the Center for Community by contacting community@usu.edu or 435.797.0446.

CARE Referral/Student of Concern Report

If you are worried about a student's well-being, safety, or ability to succeed at USU, you can submit a CARE Referral/Student of Concern Report to connect them with the support they may need. This can include concerns about mental health, academic struggles, financial hardships, food or housing insecurity, or any other significant challenges impacting their student experience. Reports can be submitted by students, faculty, staff, or family members at any time. The CARE Office will review the concern and provide outreach, resources, and assistance as appropriate.

To submit a report, visit the Care Office website.

As supporters, you play a vital role in supporting your student’s educational journey. Academic advisors serve as valuable partners in this process, helping students forge intentional connections with their strengths, interests, values, and aspirations. Together, advisors and students collaborate to craft an individualized semester-by-semester plan. This personalized roadmap ensures that students maximize their educational opportunities—from the very first semester all the way to graduation.

Encourage your student to schedule regular meetings with their academic advisor—at least once per semester—to discuss their evolving goals. As their plans shift and grow, keeping the advisor informed will help your student make the most of their college experience.

Schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

Meet with an Academic Advisor Early and Often

Academic Advisors will:

  • Provide accurate information, related to curriculum, graduation requirements, and university policies and procedures.
  • Create semester-by-semester graduation plan in Degree Works and monitor student's progress toward their declared major.
  • Provide information and strategies to utilize available campus resources and services.

Advising

Your student’s advisor will be associated with their specific major or program. Your student can find their advisor by going to their MyUSU Dashboard. Advisor information is one of the Widgets or boxes highlighted on that webpage.”

For questions, please call University Advising at 435.797.3373

Academic Resources

General Catalog

To learn more about USU academic programs, majors, minors and certificates please visit the USU Catalog where you will find information on programs, courses requirements and a sample four-year degree map.

Degree Works

This degree-auditing report shows students’ progress toward graduation. It allows them to look at other majors to see how many of the requirements they have fulfilled. It also has a planning tool that can allow students and advisors to plan schedules for future semesters. Degree Works can be found in the student’s Banner account and from MyUSU.

General Education Requirements

General Education courses provide the foundational intellectual framework for both associate and bachelor's degrees, helping students develop essential skills in critical thinking, communication, and ethics, along with the broad academic knowledge needed for success. Academic advisors will assist your student in selecting the appropriate general education courses to help them meet their goals and align with the major requirements.

Exploratory Advising

1. Meet With an Exploratory Advisor

It's completely normal for students to be undecided when they start college. Encourage your student to meet with an exploratory advisor to explore their interests, goals, and potential careers. The advisor will guide them in discovering their strengths, while introducing them to majors, minors, and certificates that align with their path toward success.

2. Help Your Student Discover More About Themselves

Encourage your student register for USU 1400: Exploring Majors and Careers. This one-credit course is designed to help students discover more about themselves and aligns their goals with career and educational options.

Your student can start exploring today by taking the USU FOCUS 2 Assessment. This online career-planning tool will help assess your student’s interest, values, skills and temperament, empowering them to choose the right major and define career aspirations.

Exploratory Focus Areas

Choosing a major can be a daunting decision. Your student may not know exactly which major to declare, but they can identify areas of interest. USU created Focus Areas to help students align their interests with groups of major options. This allows students to explore multiple majors with similar career paths.

  • Agriculture, Natural Resources & Environmental Sciences
  • Applied & Clinical Health Sciences
  • Communication, Organizations, & Influence
  • Humanities & Arts
  • Physical Sciences, Engineering & Technology
  • Social Sciences & Human Services

When your student is ready to declare their major, they should meet with the advisor for the new major or program. The advisor will review the major requirements and assist with officially changing the major.

Getting Started with the Disability Resource Center

Many students will need accommodations at some point during their university experience. If your student has used an IEP, 504 plan, or had previous accommodations, the Disability Resource Center (DRC) is an important resource for them. If your student has not used services in the past but they have a medical, physical, or mental health condition that impacts school, the DRC may be able to help.

The Disability Resource Center helps students with disabilities more fully participate in all university programs, services and activities. Students who have, or suspect they may have, a physical, mental health, or learning disability that may require accommodations should contact the DRC as soon as possible.

It is easy to get started. Just schedule an appointment by calling 435.797.2444. During an initial appointment with an Accessibility Consultant, students will discuss their academic goals, the impact of their disability, and any educational barriers they are experiencing. Using this information, along with any documentation that may be needed, appropriate accommodations will be established.

Common accommodations include:

  • Extended time on tests
  • Reduced-distraction testing environment
  • Note takers or assistive note taking technology
  • Audio versions of books
  • Interpreting, transcribing, and captioning
  • Accessible furniture
  • Architectural access
  • Accessible on-campus housing

"Working with the DRC has been an extremely helpful resource for me while I have been attending USU. The staff are all very friendly, and work to find solutions to the challenges you may face while working through school. Without some of my accommodations I would not be as well off in my academic career."

2025: Year of Undergraduate Research (YoUR)

Utah State University celebrates 50 years of undergraduate research in 2025

Since President Glen Taggart launched the URCO grant program in 1975, USU has pioneered exceptional undergraduate research opportunities across all disciplines. Details of the YoUR celebrations can be found at the Year of Undergraduate Research website.

What is YoUR?

The Year of Undergraduate Research (YoUR) is a campus-wide celebration showcasing USU's historic commitment while building toward future opportunities. Throughout 2025, special events will highlight student researchers' achievements past and present. USU was among the first public universities to establish centralized undergraduate research support, helping thousands of students develop critical skills and prepare for successful careers. You can see some of the many success stories from our undergraduate researchers past and present at 50 Faces of Research.

Why Research Matters for Your Student

Undergraduate research provides benefits that complement classroom learning by developing critical thinking abilities, providing faculty mentorship, building career-ready skills, creating networking opportunities, enhancing graduate school applications, and allowing students to contribute to their fields.

Incoming and transfer students at Statewide Campuses, even online-only students, are required to complete an online course about the same topics. To learn more about the in-person training and online course, visit Student Sexual Misconduct Prevention Training
