Members of the Eastern Leaders Academy traveled to Southern Utah University for the One Utah Summit on Oct. 6-8. For October, the Academy’s monthly Experience Day extended into a three-day leadership experience as participants attended the annual statewide event led by the governor of Utah.
The summit brings together leaders from business, government, education, and communities to discuss Utah’s future — focusing on innovation, economic development and collaboration.
Traditionally, the One Utah Summit spans two days, but this year’s event included a special first day on Oct. 6, known as Emergence Day: A Changemaker’s Gathering. This day invited the Eastern Leaders Academy and other leadership programs from across rural Utah and other countries to gather, network, listen to inspiring speakers and hear from statewide and local leaders who shared insights on leadership, community involvement and driving positive change.
On Oct. 7, participants attended mainstage speakers and panel discussions focused on energy, tourism and Utah’s economy. These presentations provided valuable insights into statewide priorities and challenges, giving academy members a broader understanding of the industries that shape their communities.
The final day, Oct. 8 — Leadership Day — featured a keynote presentation and mainstage speakers, including motivational speaker Clint Pulver. The day culminated in a recognition ceremony honoring leaders who demonstrate outstanding vision and service within their communities.
Jared Haddock Recognized for Transformational Leadership
During the ceremony, Carbon County Commissioner Jared Haddock, one of the founders of the Eastern Leaders Academy, was presented with the Transformational Leadership Award.
This award honors individuals who exemplify exceptional leadership through their ability to inspire positive change, foster collaboration and strengthen the communities they serve. Haddock’s recognition highlights his ongoing dedication to advancing eastern Utah through innovation, service and leadership development. His vision and efforts were instrumental in the creation of the Eastern Leaders Academy, a program that continues to empower local leaders and create lasting community impact.
Eastern Leaders Academy
The Eastern Leaders Academy, facilitated by Utah State University Eastern and composed of 14 participants, is a nine-month leadership development program designed to cultivate emerging and established community leaders from Carbon and Emery Counties.
One day each month, participants gather for ELA Experience Days focused on leadership themes and learning opportunities. The 2025-2026 ELA cohort began their year with a kickoff retreat on Sept. 10, setting the tone for a year of connection, growth and service.
Looking Ahead
The trip to the One Utah Summit provided the Eastern Leaders Academy participants with invaluable opportunities for growth, networking and inspiration. As the 2025-2026 cohort continues its leadership journey, members will bring home new perspectives and tools to support the people and communities of Carbon and Emery counties.
The academy’s participation and Haddock’s recognition together reflect the program’s mission: to develop leaders who serve, innovate and create meaningful change.
