USU Alum, Harvard Scientist Willy Lensch Speaks Wednesday, Sept. 6 at USU

How do you move from barely getting by in a run-down house trailer to chief of staff at the Harvard Medical School?
Utah State University alum Willy Lensch, who fills this position, will modestly tell you it’s help from generous strangers, kind mentors and luck. But his story will also reveal grit, perseverance and a lot of hard work.
All Aggies are invited to hear from Lensch at “Snack Chat: A Moment of Science” Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium, Room 130 of the Eccles Science Learning Center. Admission is free and refreshments follow Lensch’s talk.
The event is hosted by the student Science Council, the USU Student Association and the College of Science as part of USUSA’s Weeks of Welcome.
“We hope all Aggies will join us for a great gathering,” says USU Science Senator Travis Dowdle. “Dr. Lensch is a dynamic speaker with inspirational wisdom to share.”
Lensch, who earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from USU in 1991, has long studied pediatric bone marrow failure, the onset of myeloid leukemia, and rare diseases of the blood. His research includes use of human pluripotent stem cells to study blood disease.
“At the Snack Chat, I plan to discuss my career path, including why I made certain choices, my view of what is important in my professional life and how it integrates into my personal life,”Lensch says. “I’d like to provide some insights into how we wrestle with managing a large, complicated, frustrating and unbelievably exciting and rewarding institution like the Harvard Medical School. I’d also like to ask questions of USU students.”
Dowdle says he hopes the “Snack Chat” format will become a regular campus event.
“We’re grateful to Dr. Lensch for helping us kick off the academic year,” he says. “We think bringing successful alumni back to campus, who can informally share their personal journeys with current students, is a great opportunity and an ideal way to start the school year.”
