USU Chemists Lead National Chemistry Week Activities Oct. 19-23

How did your highlighter pens get their colors? What do you know about the pink, purple and blue streaks in your hair or your roommate’s sleek ombré look? Do you know where fireworks colors come from?
“We’ll be talking about how chemistry is used to create these colors and more during National Chemistry Week,” says Gunnar Wolfe, president of USU’s student chapter of the American Chemical Society, known around campus as “The Chem Club.”
Oct. 19-23, USU’s Chem Club is celebrating the week, following a community-based program led the ACS. This year’s theme is “Chemistry Colors the World.”
“National Chemistry Week gives Aggie chemists a chance to let everyone on campus know what we do and talk about the importance of chemistry to our quality of life,” Wolfe says.
During the week, the Chem Club invites the campus community to enjoy daily learning activities at exhibits in the atrium of the Eccles Science Learning Center and Widtsoe Hall.
“We’ve got activities planned where Aggies can get in touch with their inner chemist and their inner artist,” Wolfe says. “The activities focus on colors and how we use them in many different aspects of our daily lives.”
USU’s ACS chapter is a recipient of an Outstanding Chapter Award from the national organization. The group is active in community outreach, including providing hands-on learning activities for the Science Unwrapped program, USU’s annual Celebration of Children and Families event and other university events, along with visiting local schools to provide chemistry and biochemistry demonstrations.
The chapter plans a public demonstration event during USU Science Week Nov. 2-6.
