Utah State University Launches New Ranch Management Economics Degree

By Kinsey Bitterman |

Utah State University will now offer a bachelor of science degree emphasis in ranch management economics, a newly developed program designed to prepare students for success in the dynamic field of ranch management, specifically in the Intermountain West.

The degree program focuses on unique aspects of ranching in Utah, where operations predominantly take place on public lands rather than private ranches, as is the case in other states. The program's curriculum blends agribusiness and economic tools with essential knowledge in rangeland ecology, animal science and natural resource management.

Whether the goal is successfully running a family-owned ranch or pursuing a career in large-scale operations, the new program in USU’s Department of Applied Economics aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge to make informed, impactful decisions.

APEC Department Head Ryan Bosworth noted that USU’s ranch management economics degree stands out not only in Utah but also nationally as one of the few specialized undergraduate programs tailored to the needs of the Intermountain West.

“We’re thrilled to launch this new degree,” Bosworth said. “Our ranch management economics program is designed to provide students with the essential tools and knowledge they need across disciplines to excel in ranch management, and we’re confident it will be an excellent fit for students who are passionate about this field.”

Hands-On Learning Across Multiple Disciplines

Students in ranch management economics will benefit from a multidisciplinary education that covers critical areas such as:

  • Economic tools for effective decision-making.
  • Risk management and assessment strategies.
  • Agribusiness fundamentals for ranch operations.
  • Agricultural and natural resource law and policy.
  • Rangeland ecology and animal science.

This approach ensures students gain a well-rounded education that prepares them to tackle the challenges of modern ranch management.

This program is ideal for both incoming first-year students and current students who are already studying animal science, agribusiness or rangeland ecology. It offers flexibility, allowing students to switch majors without significant disruption to their academic journey. Whether students are starting a new degree program or changing from a related program, USU's ranch management economics degree helps them stay on track while pursuing their passion.

Developed With Industry Input

The program was crafted in close collaboration with industry leaders, including those managing large ranches in Utah. These ongoing partnerships will ensure that the curriculum stays relevant and that graduates are equipped with the real-world skills they need to thrive in the ranching industry.
