Finding, Accessing, and Linking to Library Content

Teaching with Technology

Abstract

The coronavirus pandemic has influenced changes in nearly every unit of the Merrill-Cazier Library. The pandemic has forced Course Reserves to close temporarily and find new ways for librarians and staff to get students and faculty the materials they need. Nick Gittins will present on changes in Course Reserves and a few other areas of the library in response to the pandemic. In addition to impacting the physical library, the pandemic has further increased the need for online electronic resources. Christopher Lee will show Lean Library, a new online research tool provided by the library, and give a refresher on how to link to online materials through Canvas using the new library URL prepend.

Chris Lee

Electronic Resources Librarian

Christopher Lee is the Electronic Resources Librarian at the Merrill-Cazier Library. As the Electronic Resources Librarian, Chris maintains the library’s online journals and works with vendors and other librarians to purchase and subscribe to new databases and ebook packages. In addition to adding new electronic resources, Chris troubleshoots issues when students, staff, and faculty are unable to access content the library should have access to. Before pursuing a career in librarianship, Chris was an Aggie here at Utah State University where he studied for degrees in English and Journalism. After graduating from Utah State University Chris pursued a Master’s of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

Nick Gittins

Library Assistant

Nick Gittins is a USU alumnus, having graduated in 2017 with a B.A. in History and minors in ancient Greek and Latin. He loves watching and talking about soccer, playing electric guitar, reading and translating Greek poetry (ancient and modern!) and spending time with his three cats Jupiter, Dis, and Grendel. He has worked at the Merrill-Cazier Library since 2011, as a student employee, a student supervisor, a student and collection manager, and as an intern in the Fife Folklore Archives. Before working at the library, he developed his passion for helping students succeed at Utah State as a tutor for America Reads, an ArtsBridge Ambassador, IT Service Desk Consultant, President and Vice-President of the Independent Music Club, and Undergraduate Teaching Fellow. He also volunteered many hours in the Latin Assistant Mentorship Program and spent time studying in Greece during the summer of 2017. Nick has been the Course Reserves coordinator for the last 5 ½ years. Working in so many different positions, with so many different members of the USU community has helped him become very familiar with the trials and tribulations that students face when trying to acquire or access their course material – and never have they faced a problem quite like they’re facing now. This summer, Nick has worked with individuals and units across the library to develop a response to the pandemic and the problem of textbook access, and he’s eager to share the library’s plan!
