Synopsis
In today’s fast-paced world, both in industry and academia, change is constant and often unpredictable. As students prepare for their future careers, they may wonder how to stay relevant, adaptable, and confident in an ever-shifting landscape. Should we focus on mastering a single specialty, or is there another way to navigate the complexities of professional life? In Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, David Epstein challenges the notion that early specialization leads to long-term success. Instead, he argues that generalists—those who explore diverse interests, develop broad skills, and remain open to change—are better equipped to thrive. In this Honors Book Lab, we will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of specialization versus generalization, explore the role of soft skills and values in professional success, and consider how effectuation—an entrepreneurial mindset—can help us shape our own futures. Join us for an engaging conversation on adaptability in an evolving world!
