Solve Common Registration Errors
Meeting with your advisor before registration is the best way to prevent issues. If you do encounter a snag, don’t worry—most errors are easy to fix. Below are the most common registration errors and how to solve them.

General Error Messages
“You have a HOLD which is preventing you from being able to register for courses. Please verify on your student account in the Banner Main Menu and call the office number(s) listed.”
What does this mean: The student has a registration HOLD which is preventing them from being able to add or drop any courses. This may be from an outstanding balance or required training that has not yet been completed.
Solution: The student needs to view their student account in MyUSU to see what office applied the hold to their account and then reach out to that office to resolve the hold.
“Enough time has elapsed since your last date of attendance so you will need to be re-admitted prior to registration. Visit: www.usu.edu/apply for more information.”
What does this mean: The student is not able to register. It may be 3 years or longer since they were last registered.
Solution: Please reach out to the Admissions Office at admit@usu.edu.
Solution: The student should clear their cache and cookies with the browser they are using or they should use a different browser.
Registration Error Messages
What does this mean: The Course Advisor must approve each student’s registration for the course.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“This course is limited to specific student cohorts (i.e. Honors, SSS, HS, First Gen). See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: For classes with a (H), (SSS), or (HS) in the title, these are courses that are limited to students who are part of the Honors, Student Support Services, or Huntsman Scholars program.
Solution: The student must contact the program directly to request approval to register for that particular section. There is no Office of the Registrar form or process to override this error. The program must authorize it on their own.
“This course is limited to students in a certain class standing. Please review the course details/restrictions for the class requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course is restricted to Class Standing: Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior. Some courses may require the student’s class to be Junior or Senior to take it.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“This course is limited to students with a major in a certain college. Please review the course details/restrictions for the class requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course is restricted to a particular College: Agriculture, ArtSci, Education, Engineering, etc. The course requires the student to be part of a certain college.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“This course is limited to students seeking a certain degree. Please review the course details/restrictions for the degree requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course requires the student to be declared into a particular degree program. Students in pre-programs typically will get this error.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval. The student can also contact the Course Advisor about declaring into that degree program.
“This course is limited to students within a specific department. Please review the course details/restrictions for the department requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course requires the student’s major to be part of a particular department.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
What does this mean: The Department must approve each student’s registration for the course.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
What does this mean: Two different courses share the same Subject and Number. These are typically Special Topics (ST) courses.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Duplicate Course” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
What does this mean: The instructor must approve each student’s registration for the course.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Instructor Permission” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the instructor for approval.
What does this mean: Students must get instructor permission to add any course after the first week of class. Keep in mind, some courses may have a hard capacity and the department must increase the capacity to allow the student to add the course, even with instructor permission. Most of those hard capacity courses are business and engineering courses.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Instructor Permission” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the instructor for approval.
“This course is limited to graduate students. Undergraduate students must obtain permission. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: This occurs when an undergraduate student attempts to register for a graduate level course (6000 and above). The instructor must approve this request since the course was created for graduate students.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Level” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the instructor for approval.
“This course requires you to register for a lab and/or recitation with the lecture. Select ‘View Linked Courses’ for the labs or recitations.”
What does this mean: This occurs when a student attempts to register for a course that is linked to another class. Both or all classes must be taken and registered for together.
Solution: Check the CRN and “Linked Course” button to confirm the lab/recitation is connected to the course. Links cannot be overridden.
“This course is limited to students in a certain major. Please review the class details/restrictions for the major requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course is restricted to a specific Major. The course requires the student’s degree program to be part of a particular major.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“Authorization needed from academic advisor to register for 18+ credits. Select ‘Register for 18+ Credits’ on the Registration Action form to make this request.”
What does this mean: By default, students are only allowed to register for 18 credits in a semester. If a student needs to go above 18 credits, they must get permission from their Major Advisor.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Actions form and select “Register for 18+ Credits” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the student’s Major Advisor for approval.
“You do not meet the prerequisites to register for this course. Please review the class details/prerequisites. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The student has not yet fulfilled the prerequisite requirement. The student should work with the Course Advisor if they seek an exception to the course requirements.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Prerequisite/Corequisite” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“This course is limited to students within a certain program. Please review the class details/restrictions for the program requirement. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: The course is restricted to a specific Program. The course requires the student’s major to be part of a particular program.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Advisor/Class/College/Degree/Department/Major/Program” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to the Course Advisor for approval.
“The seats in this section are reserved for students at other locations. Please check often as students are updating class schedules and a seat may become available or find another section.”
What does this mean: Some courses have limited seating for Logan Main Campus students and Statewide students. Even though the course may show an open seat, it may be reserved for a particular location. There is no waitlist for this course.
Solution: The student will need to check back often or find another section of the course.
“The remaining seats in this section are reserved for students at other locations. You may add yourself to waitlist position #.”
What does this mean: Some courses have limited seating for Logan Main Campus students and Statewide students. Even though the course may show an open seat, it may be reserved for a particular location. There is a waitlist for this course and you may join it.
Solution: The student will need to check their status on the waitlist and watch for a notification from the Office of the Registrar when a seat opens up.
“This course has a time conflict with CRN #. Both course instructors must approve override. See usu.edu/reghelp.”
What does this mean: This occurs when a student adds a course that is scheduled at the same time or overlaps in time with a course they are currently registered for. Both instructors must approve this arrangement. Often this means that the student will be leaving the first class early or arriving late for the second class.
Solution: The student can submit the Registration Options form and select “Time Conflict” as the error they are receiving. This request will route to both Instructors for approval.
