AI in Teaching and Learning

Generative AI tools have achieved widespread use among individuals, professionals, researchers, and students. Chatbots like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Bard are commonly used for various conversational tasks. Similarly, image generators such as Gemini, Imagen, DALL-E, and Pixlr are popular for creating and editing visual content.

Although the landscape of AI tools is changing rapidly, the underlying technologies are here to stay and will continue to impact society and grow in sophistication.

Educators have a unique opportunity to pioneer teaching and learning approaches that prepare students for a rapidly evolving future. To meet this challenge, we recommend that instructors develop skills and take action in the following areas:

Learn About AI

Gain hands-on familiarity with AI technologies, how they work, and their strengths, limitations, and impact relative to your discipline.

Focus on Objectives,
Adapt teaching

Identify what students will need to be able to thrive in the world with AI. Reconsider and adjust assignments to account for AI capabilities, while encouraging critical thinking originality.

Communicate About AI

Set appropriate expectations and class policies regarding AI. Share them in your syllabus and assignments.

Recognize and Respond to Unauthorized AI Use

Develop skills to recognize when AI is being used by a student inappropriately and create a plan to respond in constructive ways.

Enhance Teaching & Learning with AI

Find appropriate and creative ways to use AI to support the teaching and learning experience.
