USU Kicks Off 2021 Commencement with Virtual Ceremony
Utah State University celebrated more than 6,800 students from 48 states and 66 countries in a virtual commencement ceremony on May 5, 2021. Due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, USU revised its 134th commencement ceremony by hosting a general virtual ceremony.
Utah State University President Noelle E. Cockett conferred degrees upon more than 6,800 students during a virtual commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. on May 5.
The 134th commencement ceremonies in 2021 include virtual and in-person elements, after USU revised its plans due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic.
President Cockett praised the class of 2021 in her speech for their resiliency, flexibility and innovation over the past year.
“You’ve expanded your compassion as you’ve considered your actions on other known and unknown people,” she said. “You developed positivity in the face of challenges in a world with reduced in-person connections. We know that college brings personal growth, but nothing like what happened to you this year. Yet, the victories and celebrations you experienced are ingredients in your personal recipe for success.”
Students graduating from the Logan campus will have the opportunity to participate in in-person college convocation ceremonies Thursday and Friday, May 6-7. Those ceremonies will also be shown live on AggieCast. Additional details and links to programs and livestreams are available on USU’s commencement website.
Ceremonies at eight statewide campus ceremonies began April 23 and will be complete by May 6. More information about those ceremonies can be found on the Statewide Campuses graduation ceremonies website.
The 40-minute virtual ceremony included speeches by President Cockett and USU alumni and honorary degree recipient Julie Ann Robinson, chief scientist for human exploration and operations at NASA headquarters. Linda Skidmore Daines, a USU alumnus and managing director in private wealth management at Goldman Sachs, and Karen W. Morse, a former USU administrator and former president of Western Washington University, were also awarded honorary degrees and gave brief remarks.
Additionally, student and faculty award recipients were recognized, and the USU Chamber Singers and USU Scotsman Pipe and Drum Corps provided musical numbers.
