USU Engineering Student receives '2015 Star Award'
Jose Campos, a former chapter president for Utah State University’s student Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, or SHPE, is a recipient of one of the organization’s prestigious 2015 Star Awards.
SHPE made the announcement about Campos and other recipients Sept. 28.
Campos, a mechanical engineering major, is being recognized for his service as a role model to undergraduate students. In the past year, he has helped coordinate multiple community outreach events for SHPE, including the annual Noche de Ciencias, SHPE Science and Engineering Day and a regional SHPE conference held earlier this year on the USU campus.
He said he was thrilled about receiving the award.
“I was very surprised,” he said. “It is an honor to have been considered and selected. Credit should really go to our SHPE-USU members and leaders, because everything the chapter has accomplished would not have been possible without their selfless service, dedication and support. They are my role models.”
According to a SHPE press release, the annual STAR Awards are SHPE’s premier event, recognizing individuals and corporations nationally for their commitment to the growth of Hispanics through STEM careers.
Campos will be recognized for his award at SHPE’s national conference Nov. 11-15 in Baltimore, Md. He plans to graduate in May 2016 and anticipates working for Boeing where he spent time as an intern last summer.
