September 2024 Newsletter: A Bolder Way Forward

A Bolder Way Forward Advocates,

We have a few announcements in this month’s A Bolder Way Forward (BWF) newsletter.

First, we are pleased to announce two key resources that are instrumental in moving this work forward across the state:

  • “What Utahns Need to Know” Handouts: You can find these concise resources on each spokewebpage (in the Resources box) or on this BWF Resources webpage under “18-Spoke Resource Kits”. These 2-pagers provide key information, resources, and the 3 things you can do to help. Please share with your communities and networks to help move the wheel!
  • New Course for Men - “Male Allyship - A New Conversation: UWLP has just released this much-anticipated male allyship discussion series to help support efforts of BWF. Using an innovative group-learning approach—led by a video facilitator—there are five engaging conversations (gatherings). We recommend that small groups meet in any setting for sessions that include video segments, activities, discussions, and reflection. Learn about the conversations here, invite others to join, and be prepared for growth and transformation.

Second, we have an online event coming up titled “Nurturing Hope in Ourselves and Others: The Science of Hope and Well-Being.” This presentation and discussion with Dr. Chan Hellman—a professor of social work at the University of Oklahoma – Tulsa, the Executive Director of the Hope Research Center, and the author of Hope Rising—will introduce the science and power of hope, how trauma and adversity impact hope, and practical strategies for building resilience in individuals and communities. Nubia Peña will join as a co-moderator as well.

Third, additional new resources include:

Fourth, below is an update on a few things happening within the spokes, impact teams, and county coalitions:

  • Spokes are focused on outreach for working groups, and many are looking for working group co-leads who are passionate to lead efforts on specific goals and initiatives. Please visit each spoke’s webpage to view current working groups and contact the spoke coordinator to join or discuss leadership opportunities.
  • Impact Teams are beginning to connect and provide resources and important perspective to the spokes and they are also pulling in new partners. Impact Team Leaders have been attending in-person Crucial Influence Experiences to develop a deeper understanding of this important model of change.
  • County Coalitions are identifying County Spoke Representatives this month in the Poverty & Homelessness, Entrepreneurship, Higher Education, and K-12 Initiatives Spokes. The County Spoke Reps will be part of a statewide County Representative Community with spokes to facilitate two-way communication. Please visit your county's webpage to share your desire to advance the work in your county in one of those spokes.

Fifth, visit the BWF Events page to view upcoming events from BWF spokes and partners. Check out the UWLP community calendar for all events in Utah for girls and women.
