Why USU

USU was founded in 1888 as the Agricultural College of Utah through the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. Like other land-grant universities, our mission was to promote higher education and practical learning to many different people, throughout the entire state of Utah, but especially in rural areas.

In addition to our learning mission, Utah State also has a proud history of serving the local and global communities we’re part of. During World War I, campus was temporarily transformed into a military training institution — doubling its size. Several buildings served as barracks for enlisted students from Wyoming, Nebraska, and California before they were sent overseas. Overall, more than 600 “doughboys” received training at USU, and more than 1,000 other students lent their efforts to the cause.

But our military roots didn’t stop there. World War II also had a profound effect on campus. While enrollments during fell by 75%, USU once more modified buildings to serve as barracks for the Army Specialized Training Program.

Today, we strive to continue these rich traditions of dedication and service — and that includes supporting and serving service member, veterans, and their families. The Veterans Resource Office is a one-stop shop to help navigate student and academic life, complete with individualized supports tailored to each person’s unique situations and needs.

No matter where or how you attend, you will be part of the Aggie Family. So these services are available throughout the state via our 30 Statewide Campuses (including our residential campuses in Logan, Blanding, and USU Eastern in Price). No matter how you attend classes, you have access to the resources and supports that give you an advantage over other schools in the area.
