Canvas tip: You Can Adjust Your Course End Date
You can extend the amount of time students can interact with your course by going to your Canvas course settings and changing the end date to a time that is later (or earlier) than what Banner initially set. Be sure to click Update Course Details to save your change.
We recommend only brief (2 week or less) extensions for most courses, since extending a course keeps it on the Canvas dashboard for longer than students may want it there. If specific students need course access for an extended period of time (perhaps to finish an incomplete), please reach out to CIDI for help.
More on Handling Incomplete Grades
Students who cannot complete a course due to extenuating circumstances can petition their instructors for an incomplete grade. If the instructor agrees, two grades are given—an "I" grade and the student's current letter grade, computed as if the missing work had received a 0. The instructor requests an incomplete grade for the student by submitting the Incomplete Grade Request form. It is up to the Registrar's office to approve the incomplete grade and assign it to the student. The student is then required to complete the coursework within the time agreed upon with the instructor—a period of no longer than 12 months. If the instructor does not submit a change of grade within that prescribed period, the student's permanent grade will be the letter grade initially submitted.
Often students need continued access to Canvas course materials when finishing incomplete coursework. If the agreed upon time period is short, as in 2 weeks or less, it might make sense to simply extend the course end date for the entire class, as described above. However, if students need more time, please reach out to CIDI for help extending access to the course for just the student(s) taking the incomplete.
Copying Your Canvas Course Content to Spring
See the Canvas Guide for copying content for a reminder on how to copy course content into your Spring course. After you copy content, do the following as needed:- Use the Canvas bulk due-date adjuster to adjust all assignment dates in one place.
- Use the Canvas link validator to check for broken links.
- If you have a custom home page that displays modules, use the Canvas Design Tools to update the date references in module titles and the active display dates.
- If you use Proctorio, open and re-save each Proctorio-montitored quiz with a Proctorio-enabled browser. This refreshes the Proctorio settings for the new term.
