Synopsis

Craig Childs has been wandering about the high country and the canyons of the Colorado Plateau since he was a young teen, his intense curiosity leading him into some of the most hidden and sacred places in this vast landscape. Fascinated as much by the people who have occupied these lands since time immemorial as he is by their geology, flora, and fauna, he writes luminous, information-packed books about everything  from what happened to the ancestral Pueblan cultures to the environmental future of the West in the Anthropocene. This book is the latest in his prolific output, and it concerns rock art, the petroglyphs and pictographs left by ancient and historical cultures that so puzzle and seduce our imaginations today. This is, in Childs's words, "Not a guidebook to places, but a guidebook to context, meaning, and ways of seeing." As an art historian, I literally cannot wait to read this book with students!
