Copyleaks: Plagiarism Detection Tool
Copyleaks is a plagiarism detection software and platform that integrates directly into the Canvas SpeedGrader. It is used to identify instances of copied or plagiarized content to ensure the originality of your students work.
How Does it Work?
Copyleaks scans through a vast database of websites, articles, documents, and previous submissions to compare with your students' submitted content. It will then provide a "similarity score" which is the percentage of how much of the student's submitted content matches the sources in the database.
In addition to the similarity score, Copyleaks provides a report with more granular information such as which exact phrases and sentences match the database sources. It also provides a curated list of all of the different database sources that it found a match within the student's work for you to be able to compare and contrast.
Copyleaks also has other tools and capabilities that can help identify several potential cheating methods.
AI Detection
One of Copyleaks functionalities include an AI Detection tool. It is not included in the similarity score. Rather, it is an error that can only be accessed within the report.
Note that AI detection is an imperfect science and that false positives are possible, and more likely with students for whom English is a second language. Additionally, AI detectors can help identify instances where AI-generated text may be part of the content, but it does not tell the whole story of how AI may have played a part. The student may have received AI revision assistance on their original work or started with AI and then added significant revisions. Consider the Copyleaks AI detection as a data point and a conversation starter rather than proof the student cheated.
