X Accessibility

X (formerly Twitter) is a popular social media platform. Like any other social media website, X provides unique challenges for users with disabilities. By making posts accessible, content creators can reach a wider audience and make their page inclusive for all users. See Social Media Accessibility for more information on general best practices for creating accessible social media content.

Note: X updates its features often, so these steps may vary slightly over time.

How to Add Alt Text to X Images and GIFs

Alt text is a short, concise description of the contents of an image. Screen readers use alt text to convey the content and purpose of an image for users who cannot see the image. See Alt Text Guidelines for tips on writing effective descriptions.

How to add alt text to X images and GIFs:

  1. Begin creating your post and upload your photo or GIF.
  2. Click the Add description button under the image or GIF.
The edit window in X with the Utah State Logo. At the bottom of the Edit window the Add description option is highlighted by a red box.
  3. Use the image description editor that appears to write your alt text.
The Edit Image Description window in X. The ALT option at the top of the page is selected showing the Utah State University image with the description text box open.
  4. Click Save to apply your alt text to the image.
  5. Post!

Images that have alt text will show an ALT badge The ALT badge in X. in the lower left corner of the image. Clicking the ALT badge will show the image description. For GIFs, a GIF label will appear alongside the ALT badge.

How to Caption X Videos

Captions are essential for many users to access and engage with video content. See Caption Quality Standards for tips on writing effective captions.

X does not currently support auto captions for videos, spaces, or voice posts. Instead, you can upload an SRT file with your video. An SRT file is a plaintext file that includes the text of your subtitles, along with start and end timecodes. This method is currently only available through the X desktop website.

How to add captions to X videos:

  1. Begin creating your post and upload your video.
  2. Click Upload caption file (.srt) under the video and select an SRT file from your computer.
The edit window in X showing a video. Below the video highlighted by a red box are the words Upload caption file (srt).
  3. Click Save to apply your captions to the video.
  4. Post!
