Course Accessibility Process

The steps outlined on this page represent the University’s Course Accessibility Process. Completing these steps fulfills the accessibility requirements for your course and helps make your content more usable for all students.

3 Steps to Make Your Course Accessible

1

Copy and Clean

  1. Copy early: Copy your course content into Canvas as soon as registration opens—it does not need to be fully finalized.

  2. Clean house: Run TidyUP to delete outdated files, duplicate pages, and unused media so you are only fixing content students actually see.

2

Create and Check

  1. Canvas Pages: Create using structured headings, lists, styled tables, and descriptive hyperlink text. Run the Canvas Accessibility Checker before publishing.

  2. Documents & Slides: Apply accessibility best practices in Word and PowerPoint files. Run the built-in accessibility checkers before sharing. Avoid converting to PDFs.

  3. Video & Audio: Upload media to Kaltura (My Media) to automatically generate captions

3

Review and Refine

  1. Run Ally: Review your Ally Course Accessibility Report to identify remaining issues, prioritizing high-impact, easy-fix items first.

  2. Get support: Reach out to your instructional designer if you need help.

  3. Maintain the Standard: Recheck new material whenever you update your course.

Digital Accessibility Services (DAS), the Disability Resource Center (DRC), and the Center for Instructional Design and Innovation (CIDI) support this process by assisting with accessibility review and remediation. If you have questions or need help getting started, please contact us!
