Adding Captions to Canvas Videos
Captions provide a synchronized text version of spoken content and essential audio elements within a video, allowing students to read along while watching. While crucial for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, captions offer significant benefits to a broader student population.
For example, captions can:
- Improve student focus and attention
- Enhance comprehension and retention of information
- Support the understanding of new vocabulary
- Assist English language learners
- Provide a wide range of general learning advantages
Utah State University now automatically captions all videos uploaded to your My Media (via Kaltura). If you have a student in your course with a caption accommodation from the Disability Resource Center (DRC), the Accessibility Team will review your course videos to ensure caption accuracy. You will receive a detailed email from captions@usu.edu with more information regarding this process.
As part of this initiative, any external videos will be added to your My Media. To streamline this process and optimize our resources, we request that you:
- Add all course videos to your My Media account.
- Embed these videos using Kaltura.
- Remove any content you do not plan to use in your course. This allows our team to focus on the materials essential for your students' learning.
