Embed a Video in Canvas

No matter where you are embedding a video, whether for a Discussion, Announcement, Page, or Assignment, the best way to embed a video in your Canvas course is through your My Media repository. You can either upload an existing video from your My Media repository or you can create one directly from one of the mentioned Canvas sources.

To embed your video, you will need to navigate to the point where the Text Box Editor is visible (see image below for an example). In a Page or an Assignment, this will appear after you click Edit. In a Discussion, it will appear when you click Reply.

Choose Player

  • Video Player: This is the default video player that allows students to activate Closed Captions, adjust the video speed, and expand / minimize the video window. If you recorded your video with multiple sources, this feature also gives your students the option to adjust the video layout. For more information, see the Kaltura Viewing Tips page.

  • Video Player (Swap Primary): This video player is the same as the standard video player, but it swaps the initial layout by making the second source the bigger display.

  • Video Player with Download: This embedded video is similar to the standard video player, but instead of allowing students to activate Closed Captions, it allows them to download the video as well as adjust the quality settings.

  • Video Interactive Transcript: This video player requires an account with 3Play Media and a has a fairly complex setup process. For now, this option is unavailable.

  • V7 Player Beta (DO NOT USE): This video player is primarily used for live streaming and is still in it's developing stages.

Max Embed Size

This section allows you to choose the width and height of the video that you are embedding. You can choose between 608x402, 400x285, or 304x231.

Thumbnail Image

If you activate this feature, your video will be embedded as a thumbnail image. This feature doesn't look much different from a normal embedded video, it just requires your students to click on the thumbnail image before they can access the video. If you activate this option, you will be unable to activate the Auto Play feature.

Auto Play

If you activate this feature, your video will automatically start playing when your students scroll to the section of the screen that the video is located.

Start & End Time

This feature allows you to start and / or end your video at a specific time. By entering in a time for either option, the video will automatically begin and / or end at the specified time. It is important to note that your students will still be able to play the entire media by navigating to any portion of the video or by clicking Play after the video reaches its appointed end time.
