After Admission
Next Steps for International Students

Congratulations on your admission to Utah State University! Please take time to review your next steps which will navigate you through the transition of becoming a student at USU. If you have questions along the way, email internationalstudents@usu.edu.
1. Password & Student ID
Visit myid.usu.edu to create the password for your Student ID. If you have any questions, follow these step-by-step instructions. You will need to do this to request your I-20. If you have difficulty after attempting to create your password, you can get help with a password reset.
2. Enrollment Deposit
This is a $200 nonrefundable deposit. $150 is a prepayment of tuition and fees, and $50 covers new student services, including orientation. Paying the deposit:
- Is required of all admitted international undergraduate students before they begin the I-20 process
- Confirms your intent to enroll
- Secures your spot at USU
- Allows you to sign a contract for on-campus housing; consideration is first come, first served. Reserve early because housing fills up quickly.
Fall Priority Deposit Deadline: April 1
Spring Priority Deposit Deadline: Nov 1
Pay your enrollment deposit to complete the following steps.
3. I-20 Request
International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Portal using your Student ID (A-Number) and password. Click on F/J Students and follow the instructions to upload your required documents for your I-20.
4. I-20 Shipping
Request your shipping label for your I-20, if you prefer the hard-copy I-20. (You will want to review these detailed instructions.) After your I-20 is ready we will ship it to you. Due to the pandemic, SEVP allows us to send your I-20 electronically. Let us know how you want to receive your I-20.
5. I-901 SEVIS Fee
Pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee to activate your I-20/SEVIS record. Save a copy of your I-901 SEVIS fee receipt to show for your visa appointment and records.
6. Visa Interview & Preperation
- Complete the form DS-160 (Online Visa Application) to schedule your visa appointment. Remember to check Appointment Wait Times and Application Fees.
- Locate a U.S. Embassy/Consulate location near you in your country and schedule your F-1 visa appointment.
- Review tips on successfully finishing the visa consular interview.
7. Immunizations
USU health insurance meets all minimum requirements for F-1 and J-1 visa holders.
8. Housing
Successfully secure your dorm or apartment as soon as you can before you arrive. Housing reservations fill up fast. Off-campus housing is also available.
9. Transportation
Schedule your air travel and plan to arrive at the Salt Lake City International Airport.
USU is approximately 1.5 hours from the Salt Lake City International Airport. Do your best to arrive in Logan, Utah, when your housing accommodation is open. Make ground transportation arrangements with the Salt Lake Express shuttle from the airport to Logan, Utah, prior to your arrival. Visit the international arrival webpage for more information.
10. Orientation
Before you register for classes, you will need to complete the online orientation. Your online orientation will guide you on how to register for classes within MyUSU. Review the Academic & Registration Calendars for deadlines. For information about paying tuition and fees, visit the Registrar's Office website. For information about your academic resources, visit the academic resources finder.
11. Arrival & Check-In
When you arrive at USU, you are required to first check-in online for the Office of Global Engagement using the ISSS Portal. (You can find a tutorial video to guide you through the process.) Students transferring from another U.S. university or college are also required to check-in so that transfer paperwork can be completed. Also, complete the required online immigration orientation within the ISSS Portal online check-in (see tutorial video).
12. USU 1010: Connections
Connections is an academic course designed to ease your transition to Utah State University and to prepare you for your college experience. Classes discuss the importance of resilience and how students can go about developing habits of mind that will help them professionally and personally throughout their lives. Connections helps you develop a support network of classmates, faculty, and staff to help you have a successful beginning to your academic experience.
