Next Steps for International Students

Congratulations on your admission to Utah State University! Take time to review your next steps which will navigate you through the transition of becoming a student at USU. If you have questions about step 2 (below), email usuintl@usu.edu. If you have questions about the Form I-20, email internationalstudents@usu.edu.
1. Password & Student ID
Visit myid.usu.edu to create the password for your Student ID, also known as A-Number. If you have any questions, follow these step-by-step instructions. You will need to do this to confirm your enrollment and request your Form I-20. If you have difficulty after attempting to create your password, you can get help with a password reset.
2. Confirm Your Enrollment (select one)
Pay the Enrollment Deposit
(Coming to USU)
This is a $200 nonrefundable deposit. $150 is a prepayment of tuition and fees, and $50 covers new student services, including orientation.
Defer Your Admission
(Coming to USU later)
A deferral is for admitted students who have not started classes at USU, and need to delay their admission to a future semester.
Decline Your Offer
(Not coming to USU)
Declining your admissions offer withdraws your USU application, deactivates Admissions scholarships, and cancels your on-campus housing.
Pay your enrollment deposit to complete the following steps.
The enrollment deposit is a $200 nonrefundable deposit. $150 is a prepayment of tuition and fees, and $50 covers new student services, including orientation. Paying the deposit:
- Is required of all admitted international undergraduate students before they begin the Form I-20 process
- Confirms your intent to enroll
- Secures your spot at USU
- Allows you to sign a contract for on-campus housing; consideration is first come, first served. Reserve early because housing fills up quickly.

3. Sign a Contract for On-Campus Housing (optional)
If you plan to live on-campus, sign your housing contract early. On-campus housing fills up quickly and spaces are not guaranteed. Contracts in Logan are available to incoming students who pay the enrollment deposit. Living on-campus is not required for first-year students, but is highly recommended for international students, especially those without a sponsor or co-signer for an apartment lease. 4. Show Proof of Finances & Form I-20 Request
You will receive an email from internationalstudents@td.usu.edu, giving you instructions about the Form I-20. You will be invited to access the International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Portal using your Student ID (A-Number) and password. Follow the instructions to upload your required documents for your Form I-20.
5. Form I-20 Shipping
Request your shipping label for your Form I-20, if you prefer the hard-copy Form I-20 to be shipped to you by postal mail (review these shipping instructions). As an alternative, SEVP allows your Form I-20 to be available to you electronically. Let us know how you want to receive your Form I-20.
6. I-901 SEVIS Fee
Pay the I-901 Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) fee to activate your Form I-20 or SEVIS record. Save a copy of your I-901 SEVIS fee receipt to show for your visa appointment and records. Visit the Study in the States website to learn more about studying in the United States.
7. Visa Interview & Preparation
- Complete the form DS-160 (Online Visa Application) to schedule your visa appointment. Remember to check Appointment Wait Times and Application Fees.
- Locate a U.S. Embassy/Consulate location near you in your country and schedule your F-1 student visa appointment.
- Review ten tips on successfully finishing the visa consular interview.
8. Online Orientation, Meet with Your Academic Advisor & Register for Classes
Before you register for classes, you will need to:
- Complete the online orientation. Your online orientation will guide you on how to register for classes within MyUSU. Review the Academic & Registration Calendars for deadlines.
- For Exploratory majors, visit the Exploratory Scheduling website to schedule your advising appointment so you can obtain assistance about registering for classes, if you have questions.
- For all other majors, visit the major advising website, to schedule your advising appointment so you can obtain assistance about registering for classes, if you have questions.
- If you are transferring from a college or university, you are required to meet with your academic advisor prior to registering for classes.
- For information about paying tuition and fees, visit the Office of the Registrar website.

9. USU Health Insurance
USU health insurance meets all minimum requirements for F-1 and J-1 visa holders.
10. Transportation
Schedule your air travel and plan to arrive at the Salt Lake City International Airport.
USU is approximately 1.5 hours from the Salt Lake City International Airport. Do your best to arrive in Logan, Utah, when your housing accommodation is open. Make ground transportation arrangements with the Salt Lake Express shuttle from the airport to Logan, Utah, prior to your arrival. Visit the international arrival webpage for more information.
11. Arrival & Check-In
When you arrive at USU, you are required to first check-in online for the Office of Global Engagement using the ISSS Portal. (You can find a tutorial video to guide you through the process.) Students transferring from another U.S. university or college are also required to check-in so that transfer paperwork can be completed. Also, complete the required online immigration orientation within the ISSS Portal online check-in (view the tutorial video).
All international undergraduate students are required to attend our in-person orientation day. Please plan to attend this orientation day as you make your travel arrangements.
Fall 2026 Semester Important Dates:
The Fall 2026 semester in-person orientation will take place on Monday, August 24, 2026.
First Day of Classes Fall 2026: Monday, August 31, 2026
Spring 2027 Semester Important Dates:
The Spring 2027 semester in-person orientation will take place on Friday, January 8, 2027.
First Day of Classes Spring 2027: Monday, January 11, 2027

12. USU 1010: Connections
Connections is an academic course designed to ease your transition to Utah State University and to prepare you for your college experience. Classes discuss the importance of resilience and how students can go about developing habits of mind that will help them professionally and personally throughout their lives. Connections helps you develop a support network of classmates, faculty, and staff to help you have a successful beginning to your academic experience.
13. Request Your International University Credits to Transfer to USU
Before your transfer credits can be evaluated, International Undergraduate Admissions must receive official transcripts from each college or university for which you will request transfer credit review. Courses can be evaluated after you have accepted your offer of admission to USU as a degree-seeking student, confirmed your attendance, and provided the required documents as given in the information below.
